The Dexter star recently opened up about Season 1's most shocking death and revealed whether the loss changed Dexter.
Warning: The following story contains spoilers for Dexter: Resurrection Season 1.
Looking back at the first season of Dexter: Resurrection, there were many strong and memorable moments for fans. But honestly, nothing hit viewers harder than the tragic death of Angel Batista.
After becoming convinced that Dexter Morgan was truly the Bay Harbor Butcher, Batista made it his personal mission to finally bring his former friend to justice. Determined to find enough evidence against Dexter, he ignored the dangers around him and became obsessed with proving his theory. Sadly, that obsession led him straight into a deadly trap.
Batista was murdered in cold blood by billionaire Leon Prater, and his final moments were especially frustrating for fans. Even as Dexter tried to save his life, Batista's belief that Dexter was a monster that killed Doakes and LaGuerta (among other people), completely blinded him.
This particular scene was also difficult for the cast to film. Speaking with Collider's Tania Hussain, Michael C. Hall admitted that Batista's death was heartbreaking and described the day on set as a very tough one.
He explained that it was important for viewers to see the price Dexter paid for losing Batista and actually suggested that the loss will continue to affect him moving forward.
Hall also described Batista's death as the end of an era and said it was the last thing Dexter wanted. He went on to explain that Dexter often believes he is capable of having real relationships and friendships, even though he struggles to connect with people in a legit way. However, losing Batista was not a theoretical loss for him. It was actually real, and it deeply affected him.
In what could be seen as a tease for the upcoming season, Hall added that Batista's death legitimately cost Dexter something and that it is a burden he now carries. According to the actor, the loss humanizes Dexter even more.
The conversation also turned to David Zayas, with Hall having nothing but praise for his longtime co-star.
He said that filming scenes with Zayas again this season was amazing and noted that having real 20-year memories together as actors actually brought an authenticity to their scenes that could not be recreated any other way.
Despite Angel Batista's death, there have already been some hints that David Zayas will return in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2. While the extent of his involvement remains unknown, Zayas was spotted in costume as Batista during filming weeks ago, and Michael C. Hall also teased his return in another interview.
So, despite the devastating end Angel met, it looks like we haven't seen the last of him yet, and for that we have to thank the show's unique way of bringing dead characters back!
