Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 — Boss Shares Exciting New Update on Production Timeline

Learn when the writers’ room opens and what’s ahead for Season 2.

Fresh off the heels of the critically acclaimed finale of Dexter: Resurrection season one, Showrunner Clyde Phillips made an appearance on this week's episode of the Dissecting Dexter podcast to talk all things Dexter!

Since its early days, the podcast has grown and evolved alongside the resurgence of Dexter. In recent months, Gareth has expanded the weekly review episodes with engaging interviews featuring Scott Reynolds (Executive Producer / Writer), David Zayas (Angel Batista), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (Blessing), Kadia Saraf (Detective Wallace), and Dominic Fumusa (Detective Oliva).

The interview with Clyde Phillips offers a bevy of insights (and affirmations) that fans have been dying for in the wake of one of the best seasons in the history of the show. Over the course of the hour-long interview, the conversation weaves it's way through the recent history of Dexter including the controversial finale of New Blood, the tragic cancellation of Original Sin, the state of the Trinity spin-off, and of course, the future of Resurrection!

A Timeline Emerges

Given the cancellation of Dexter: Original Sin just a few weeks ago and the huge swell of support for the continued advetures of Dexter Morgan, Clyde's candid interview couldn't have come at a better time. Aside from providing insight into what could have been with Original Sin, Phillips was surprisingly candid about something else that has been on the minds of fans since the finale aired over a week ago: The status and timeline for season 2; which, at the time of this writing, has not been "OFFICIALLY" green lit by the studio. With that said, Phillips' comments on the subject should be enough to put many of those concerns to bed.

Despite there being no official statement from the studio (which is not unusual given the season just ended) as of yet, Clyde offered up a solid timeline for the production. When asked if the plan was to release a new season of Dexter: Resurrection for the next two summers (at least), Clyde responded:

"That's completely up to Paramount. For various reasons I can’t get into, we’re going to be shooting next summer... we're going to be shooting starting next spring; the writing room opens October 6 and we will write through the holidays into early spring and then start what we call 'soft prep' meaning we start planning the stages, the sets, and all of that... and locations and then we begin the casting process and take it from there. We will be shooting next summer so we won't be airing next summer."

So there you have it. With Original Sin not moving forward, the wait for more Dexter will likely be a bit longer than many of us were expecting. With that said, there is still a lot to celebrate especially considering that Clyde Phillips sounds confident and optimistic throughout the interview.

How do you feel about this projected timeline, especially knowing that there won't be any more Original Sin in the meantime?

A bright future lies ahead

Given the shift in leadership at Paramount and the unfortunate cancellation of Original Sin, its easy to question the future outlook for the series. With that said, shifting priorities and strategies don't necessarily mean bad things are afoot. As of right now, the studio seems to be basking in the glow of a tremendous success and the spirits among those at the helm of Resurrection seem high.

While we may still be patiently awaiting an official renewal announcement, signs that a solid timeline are already in place suggest that it's an inevitability.
