Could the beloved sequel series be facing the same fate as Dexter: Original Sin?
With the season finale of Dexter: Resurrection just around the corner, it’s only natural for fans to speculate about the show’s future and whether a second season is already guaranteed.
From the very beginning, both Michael C. Hall and showrunner Clyde Phillips made it clear that unlike Dexter: New Blood, the plan for Resurrection has always been to continue for multiple seasons. Most recently, co-showrunner Scott Reynolds even revealed the exact number of seasons they have mapped out.
But as every TV fan knows, Hollywood can be unpredictable. Even projects that seem destined for renewal can get canceled at the last moment, often due to budget changes or shifting network strategies. This unfortunate reality was proven once again when Dexter: Original Sin, the beloved prequel set in 1991 Miami, was unexpectedly axed by Paramount+ in late August—despite what once appeared to be a guaranteed second season.
What Happened With Dexter: Original Sin?
Back in April, Dexter: Original Sin received a wave of positive news: credible reports confirmed that a writers’ room for Season 2 was about to open, signaling early development was underway. But monhts later, when Skydance merged with Paramount Global, a new leadership team stepped in, dramatically reshaping the company’s streaming strategy. As a result, even with strong ratings, Original Sin became one of the casualties.
This was especially shocking given that the prequel delivered the most-watched series premiere in Showtime history and managed to grow its audience by the finale. Still, its status as a prequel, combined with Paramount’s shifting financial priorities—including billion-dollar deals like the UFC partnership—ultimately sealed its fate.
Fans Draw Parallels With Dexter: Resurrection
Naturally, when fans recently learned that the writers’ room for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 is also slated to open soon, confirming the plans for more, some were reminded of the Original Sin situation. Could this be history repeating itself? Could Resurrection also be left in limbo or, worse, canceled despite its early promises?
Should Dexter: Resurrection Fans Be Worried?
The answer, thankfully, is no.
Unlike the prequel, Dexter: Resurrection benefits from being the flagship continuation of the main Dexter storyline. While Original Sin was a hit in its own right, its prequel status and timing made it more vulnerable to the sweeping changes at Paramount.
Resurrection, on the other hand, has established itself as a cornerstone series, with glowing reviews, strong ratings, and fan enthusiasm that’s only growing. For these reasons, it’s highly unlikely that it will share the same fate as Original Sin. Canceling it now would not only upset a dedicated fanbase but also mean shelving one of Paramount’s most valuable prestige titles.
Why Original Sin Was Different
To be clear, the cancellation of Dexter: Original Sin was not due to poor performance. The series had momentum, fan demand, and critical buzz. But in the world of corporate mergers and billion-dollar streaming shifts, even strong shows can become collateral damage. Unfortunately, Original Sin paid the price of being a prequel series that didn’t fully align with Paramount’s new direction.
That said, fans aren’t giving up. The “Save Dexter: Original Sin” campaign is gaining traction, with thousands signing petitions to urge Paramount to reconsider. [You can sign the main petition here.]
When Will Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 Be Officially Renewed?
While it’s clear that Dexter: Resurrection will continue, the official renewal announcement might not come immediately. Historically, Showtime and Paramount have taken their time—sometimes weeks or even months after a finale—before making renewal decisions public.
With the leadership shake-up still fresh, fans should be patient but optimistic. All signs point to Season 2 happening, even if the paperwork isn’t signed just yet.
For now, what’s certain is this: Dexter: Resurrection is far from over, and the story will continue. Stay tuned here on Dexter Daily for the latest updates.
