The two actors had priceless reactions while rewatching iconic scenes from the original series!
Showtime recently brought together the Dexter cast and crew to film exclusive behind-the-scenes content for their official YouTube channel and social media platforms. Among these gems is a standout video featuring Michael C. Hall (Dexter Morgan) and David Zayas (Angel Batista) reacting to some of the most iconic scenes from Seasons 1–4 of the original Dexter series — and it’s pure gold.
While the video doesn’t delve into the upcoming Dexter: Resurrection series, it’s a nostalgic tribute to the original show, filled with laughter, revelations, and heartfelt reflections. Hall and Zayas sit side by side, watching memorable clips and sharing untold stories from the set — including some fascinating behind-the-scenes secrets you’ve probably never heard before.
Scene 1: "Surprise, Motherf*cker!" (Season 1)
This unforgettable moment featuring Doakes (Erik King) left a lasting impression on fans — and the actors too.
David Zayas reflected, “I wonder if Erik knew that line would become so iconic. It just shows how brilliant the writing was. So many lines from this show still stick with us today.”
Michael C. Hall chimed in with some interesting production trivia:
“Those shipping container scenes were actually shot in Long Beach, California — not Miami. We shot the pilot in Miami, but we couldn’t get hurricane insurance to continue filming there. So, we often had to make places in Miami look like Long Beach and vice versa. It was all about matching locations.”
Scene 2: "They Said That Stain Would Come Out" (Season 3)
Watching a rooftop scene with Dexter and Miguel Prado (played by Jimmy Smits), Hall shared his fond memories of working with the Emmy-winning actor:
“That rooftop scene was such a blast. Especially in the wide shots — Jimmy just owned it. As Miguel, he brought this intense energy. He’d get so into it, and during takes, he’d yell, ‘LINE! LINE!’ He was so passionate. I remember the script supervisor just going, ‘Good lord.’ But Jimmy’s the sweetest guy — massive heart. And also... a huge head. Literally. Not ego-wise — just physically massive!”
Scene 3: "I Own You" (Season 2)
Michael C. Hall on Dexter’s intense confrontation with Sgt. Doakes:
“There’s no way I could pull this off in real life. That headbutt? Probably the most badass thing Dexter ever did. From the very first episode, Doakes was the one guy who never bought Dexter’s act — he was onto him from day one. That tension created such a compelling dynamic for Dexter.”
“It definitely taught Dexter a lesson in what kind of behavior not to provoke in people.”
Scene 4: "Shut Up, C**t" (Season 4)
Michael reminisced about working with John Lithgow during Season 4 — arguably the most chilling season of the series.
“I actually talked to John not long ago, and he told me this sequence was one of his all-time favorite things he’s ever done. I remember that day on set — we couldn’t stop laughing between takes. The scene was so twisted, but John and I were just cracking up. It was surreal.”
