The actor has announced his return to the franchise.
Dexter: Resurrection is currently filming in New York City, boasting an impressive lineup of new and familiar faces. The latest casting announcement revealed that David Dastmalchian will be joining the next chapter of the saga in a guest role.
While the series has been somewhat reserved in confirming returning cast members, aside from Michael C. Hall, we know that David Zayas, James Remar, and Jack Alcott are set to reprise their roles. Fans are eagerly awaiting news on potential returns from Julia Jones, Desmond Harrington, and C.S. Lee.
A Major Cameo is On the Way
However, a major reveal has just surfaced that will excite long-time fans of the series. John Lithgow, the legendary actor who portrayed the chilling Trinity Killer in Season 4, confirmed in a new interview with Variety that he will be making a brief return in Dexter: Resurrection.
Lithgow, who previously reprised his role in a flashback scene for Dexter: New Blood in 2021, shared that his return will occur as Dexter recovers from near-fatal injuries in the hospital.
John Lithgow's Statement:
“I just went back to do a day,” Lithgow disclosed. “They’re rebooting the entire Michael C. Hall version of ‘Dexter.’ And it turns out he didn’t die after all. I come back sort of as a phantom, as he gradually comes to life on a hospital bed.”
This surprising and thrilling news is yet another testament to Lithgow's love for the role and the series. Despite his extensive career, which now includes portraying Dumbledore in HBO's forthcoming 'Harry Potter' series, Lithgow remains deeply connected to his portrayal of Arthur Mitchell.
In December, during a press interview with Clyde Phillips ahead of the Dexter: Original Sin series premiere, it was revealed that a prequel series focused on the early years of the Trinity Killer is fully written. This project, first announced in February 2023, will feature John Lithgow returning to narrate young Arthur Mitchell's inner thoughts.
While the future of the series remains uncertain, updates are expected soon.
Almost sixteen years after Season 4, Lithgow's performance as the Trinity Killer continues to be one of the most memorable and chilling arcs in Dexter history. His passion for the character and admiration for the show are evident in every return.
