Trinity Killer Prequel: New Dexter Series Progresses with John Lithgow as Young Arthur’s Inner Voice

The entire Trinity Killer series is already written according to Clyde Phillips.

Surprise! The Dexter Trinity Killer prequel series, first announced in February 2023 alongside Dexter: "Origins", and Dexter: New Blood Season 2, remains “in development” at Paramount+ with Showtime. The series will explore the origins of the infamous serial killer Arthur Mitchell.

Clyde Phillips, showrunner for Dexter Seasons 1–4, Dexter: New Blood, and Dexter: Original Sin, along with executive producer and writer Scott Reynolds, are co-creators and executive producers of the project, according to Deadline. Earlier this spring, a development room was held for the spinoff.

While promoting Dexter: Original Sin in New York City earlier this month, Phillips provided an update on the Trinity Killer series:

“We wrote the entire Trinity Killer series. At the moment, it is on the back burner,” Phillips said in an interview with Deadline. “John Lithgow has agreed to be the voice of his younger self, the way Michael Hall is doing for [Original Sin].”

The Deadline report also notes that Dexter: Resurrection, a sequel to Dexter: New Blood, will be narrated by Patrick Gibson, who plays young Dexter in Original Sin. However, this detail may be a misreport.

Executives at Paramount+ and Showtime may be waiting to gauge audience response to Dexter: Original Sin before fully committing to the Trinity Killer prequel. Some of Arthur Mitchell’s backstory, which would serve as the foundation for the prequel, was previously revealed in Season 4 of the original Dexter series.

Arthur’s childhood was marked by tragedy. He accidentally caused the death of his sister, Vera, after startling her in the shower, which led to her fatal fall through the glass door. The family’s devastation spiraled into further darkness—his mother committed suicide, and his father became an abusive alcoholic. These traumatic events inspired Arthur’s infamous murder rituals, which often mirrored his early life.

A potential Trinity Killer prequel would delve deeper into Arthur’s psychological descent, offering a dramatic exploration of how he became the man viewers met in Dexter. The series aims to humanize Arthur—not to excuse his actions, but to provide a chilling, psychological profile of a killer’s journey to darkness.
