Dexter: Original Sin Season 1 Wishlist - 7 Things the Prequel Must Include!

47 days left until the Dexter: Original Sin premiere!

Dexter: Original Sin, the highly anticipated prequel series set in 1991 Miami, premieres in less than 50 days, and production is heating up. Meanwhile, the writers are also focusing on another exciting project within the franchise: a sequel to Dexter: New Blood. This new series, titled Dexter: Resurrection, will see Michael C. Hall returning in the lead role, much to the delight of fans.

Hall will also play a significant part in the prequel by voicing Dexter's inner monologue in Dexter: Original Sin, which stars Patrick Gibson as a young Dexter. Hearing Michael's iconic voice once again, especially in a prequel, has been a top wish for fans, and its inclusion is a major relief as it promises to keep the essence of the character alive.

With Dexter: Original Sin set to premiere on December 13, what else is on fans' wishlist for the new series? We’ve compiled a list of the top seven things fans are hoping to see—a blend of nostalgia, deeper character development, and chilling new insights that explore the origins of everyone's favorite antihero. Check out our must-haves for the upcoming prequel!

1. Dark Humor

One key element of the original Dexter series that made it even more awesome, was the dark comedic elements that were present especially in the first six seasons. From Dexter's sardonic, darkly humorous internal dialogue, to Masuka's awkward cringy jokes.

Dexter's dark humor lies in his ability to speak about violence and his own disturbed nature with a calm, almost casual tone, making viewers both uncomfortable and amused.

2. The original Soundtrack from the main Dexter Series, Composed by Daniel Licht.

This could easily have been number one on the list, as it’s crucial to the show’s essence. Daniel Licht, the composer behind the original Dexter score, was renowned for his innovative and eclectic use of instruments, creating a sound that was truly unique. By blending traditional and unconventional instruments, Licht evoked a sense of unease, tension, and dark humor that became synonymous with the series. Sadly, Daniel Licht passed away in 2017, but his legacy endures through his incredible work on Dexter.

In Dexter: New Blood, the music was skillfully crafted by the talented composer Pat Irwin, who delivered an exceptional score for the series. The 2021-2022 miniseries featured Daniel Licht's score only during the end credits (the "Blood Theme") and briefly when Dexter collapses after being shot by Harrison.

Irwin who is set to return for Dexter: Original Sin, has been teasing his work on the prequel through his social media, building anticipation for what’s to come. While the upcoming show has found its new composer, it’s vital for producers to incorporate Daniel Licht’s original soundtrack throughout Dexter: Original Sin. This would be the perfect way to evoke nostalgia and engage longtime fans. Both of Licht’s and Irwin’s compositions could create an incredible, harmonious tribute to the series’ musical roots.

3. The Birth of Harry's Code

Flashbacks will play a crucial role in Dexter: Original Sin, but this time, many will be from Harry's perspective, unlike the original series' flashbacks, which were mostly seen through Dexter’s eyes. The prequel should offer audiences a deeper look into the origins of Harry’s Code. Simply known as "The Code," it is a set of rules created by Harry Morgan, Dexter's adoptive father, to help Dexter manage his violent urges. In the final season of the main series, Dr. Evelyn Vogel revealed that she played a significant role in helping Harry develop the code. This suggests that a younger version of Vogel could make an appearance in Dexter: Original Sin.

4. Origins of Dexter's Methodology

The prequel presents a chance to explore how Dexter learned to control his impulses and develop his meticulous methods. From early missteps to perfecting his ritual, this insight could be a compelling part of Dexter's backstory, showing how he became the calculating figure we know.

5. Authentic Miami Vibe from the Early Seasons

Capturing the authentic Miami atmosphere was essential to the original series, even though it was primarily filmed in Los Angeles. The first four seasons excelled at this, but from Season 5 onwards, the Miami vibe gradually faded. With Dexter: Original Sin set in the post-1980s era of Miami, the show has a great opportunity to bring back that distinctive feel and immerse viewers in the vibrant, gritty backdrop of the city.

6. A Formidable Adversary

To truly shape Dexter into the cold, calculating antihero fans know, he must face a worthy adversary. Whether it’s another killer, a shrewd investigator, or a dangerous mentor, Dexter’s early days should be marked by threats that challenge him and push him to refine his skills.

7. Easter Eggs of Villains from the Main Series

Easter eggs are a beloved part of movies and TV shows, and Dexter: Original Sin should be no exception. From callbacks to iconic situations or lines to mentions of future villains from the main series, these nods would thrill fans. Imagine how exciting it would be if the prequel hinted at the presence of the Trinity Killer, who was still active during that time period.

What elements do you think should be included in the upcoming Dexter prequel?
