Comic-Con 2012: Bloody-Good Season 7 Scoop From the Dexter Panel

Are you hungry for some great Dexter Season 7 spoilers? TVLine's Meg Masters gives us some scoop from yesterday's Dexter panel at Comic-Con! Hit the jump below to read them!

SISTER’S ACT | Is Deb actually buying what Dexter is selling in first few minutes of Season 7? “He hopes so… In that moment,” Michael C. Hall said with a laugh. Added Jennifer Carpenter, “She’s just taking one step at a time; she takes one step forward and is sent 10 back.”

POWER PLAYER | Look for Season 7′s Deb to embrace her position of power a bit more than in previous years. “She actually needs [her authority] now. It’s the one card she has to play,” Carpenter teased. “At any second — if Deb lives after what you just saw [in the promo] — she could tell someone to put cuffs on him.” Long story short, “It’s like Dexter and Deb are just fish swimming [in opposite directions] for awhile.”

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE | Showrunner Scott Buck says the theme of Season 7 is “really the simplest theme of all: What are the consequences of love?” And fret not, this isn’t your cookie cutter tale of the “L” word. “When told through the perspective of Dexter, it’s something completely different.”

BLOOD, LUST | Carpenter might be alone in these sentiments, but she was not as taken aback by Deb’s seemingly sudden affections toward her “brother.” “There was certainly a fascination that I thought Deb had with Dexter [early on], so it didn’t feel like it was so bizarre to play that last season.” However, she added, “I think him stabbing somebody trumps those thoughts.”

ANOTHER WORLD | New Dexter import Yvonne Strahovski was on hand for today’s festivities, and she had an adorably difficult time discussing the differences between working Chuck and Showtime’s dark drama. “Just in general, the energy on the sets are very different,” she said. “There were…loud, different characters on Chuck,” she laughed. “It’s different, but it’s really great.”

DADDY’S HOME | Praise Jeebus! James Remar’s Harry will appear in Season 7 — and in a major way. “We’ll actually see original flashbacks from when Dexter was a child, and we’ll also continue to see him as Dexter’s subconscious.”

PARENT TRAP | “As Harrison gets older and becomes more receptive, it becomes a dicier proposition everyday,” Hall mused of the lad having such a bad dad. What’s more, little H’s Aunt Deb “now has a sense of what she’s dealing with with her brother, and that changes things as well,” he teased. “So, Dexter has someone that is really encouraging him to really face what he’s trying to pull off as a parent.”

    6. Did you even read the interview? She said that seeing Dexter plunge a knife into someone would trump those thoughts. It would be completely OOC for Deb to still have feelings for him. It would be disrespectful to the character of Deb.

    12. “I think him stabbing somebody trumps those thoughts.” The key words are "I think" she is saying this knowing very well that she cannot reveal any such information. Scott Buck already said they are not going to shy away from the storyline since they are already in it. He was quoted at saying around mid season we will see them start to deal with that aspect of the storyline

    17. you keep saying that but you offer no credible argument to support it. so, either do it or gtfo.

    19. @Anon, You sound like someone who idealizes Deb's character too much.

      Delete
    20. that's the conflict right there. it's these issues that she'll have to deal with, her personal set of principles directly contradicts Dexter's nature. But she won't stop loving him, because that would simply be illogical. so we'll probably observe how she struggles to cope with the whole issue. besides, she has had a history of loving emotionally unattainable men, because of her daddy complex, brian was a fine example of that. respecting the character means acknowledging all of their qualities and still liking them.

      Delete
    21. and yes, you've idolized her, she's not perfect. if anything, she's one of the most flawed characters on television. in a good way, but still.

    22. @anon 1:01

While I am not trying to change your mind and you are free to think what you want to think I can definitely tell you that you will be very dissapointed. Think about it, what would writers want to see more, people talking about something they like/did not like in the show because it is memorable or people not talking about something and thus is forgettable? I 100% know that because the whole Deb/Dex thing created such a huge buzz they are definitely not going to go back on the storyline about that. It would result in a huge continuity error and people would lose interest not to mention they most likely would lose more viewers not continuing with the storyline versus only losing a few viewers when they do continue with the storyline. Both the books and the show feed off that one loves the other or that they both possibly love eachother.

      Delete
    23. How is that illogical? When you learn that the person that you are "in love" with is a sociopathic serial killer then you stop loving them...Rudy is an example of that. Deb was completely disgusted with herself and Rudy after she found out what he was. Did she still love him? NO!

      Delete
    24. Pretty sure she wasn't in love Rudy, that was just a fling. At least that's what I think.

      Delete
    25. 1:16

brian tried to kill her, this is quite different.

      Delete
    26. @1:16 Im pretty sure that in S2 Deb had a conversation with Rita and how Rita thought how easy it would be to fall back into her old life with Paul and then Deb said (making the parallel to her and Rudy) "But what he had to offer wasn't real" so it's different cause Dex was sort of real with Deb and he loved and cared for her.

      Delete
    27. Patrik's right - She never loved anyone that much as she loves Dexter, not even close... Even though she was thinking about marrying Brian... Her denial of the feelings she's always had for Dexter was just too strong for her to realise the truth... But she's said it herself - she was just choosing men who were either like Dexter or the exact opposite of him, just to avoid the fact that he was the only man she's ever trully loved...

      Delete
    28. Thank you. I'll just keep saying what's on my mind and you can fill in the blanks. ;)

      Delete
    29. @Moony, The writers probably just made up the "choosing opposites or people like Dexter" to justify this whole thing. Deb obviously chose Lundy because he was like her dad, but he actually payed attention to her. They probably just had her get with Brian to add drama to the show. I don't buy it at all.

      Delete
    30. ...Sigh, I just really don't want this incest plot. It seems too dark, I really liked their old interactions as brother and sister cause it was more fun. If the incest happens it will just make the characters look twisted and evil.

      Delete
    32. Patrik: :) I guess we wouldn't have much trouble finishing each other's thoughts, whatever they would be about... :)

Anonymous: Well, this is purely my speculation, but... Lundy was quite "perfect" for Debra since he was both Harry-like type and Dexter-like type too... There are numerous scenes where Dexter's and Lundy's characters are compared and they always seem very similar... If my memory serves me well, there is even a scene in which Debra first talks Lundy's personality, than about Dexter's personality and then it's no longer very distinguishable who is she talking about, whether Lundy or Dexter :) And about Brian... The book says that Brian and Dexter look very alike in some detailes, especially the eyes... Which is probably truth even in the serial version... So this might be one of the reasons why Debra (unconciously) chose Brian... And Brian was also similar like Dexter even in other ways, like being a bit mysterious and all, so to me their relationship was completely legit :)

      Delete
    33. Maybe, but i doubt that the writers actually had any of that in mind though.

What can you say at this point?

I know it's the most retarded thing I have ever heard - listening to some of these fans talk drives me up the fucking wall, it's like when I used to go to church and watch people seriously discuss things like cable television piping Satan into people's houses, and how people who drink beer or smoke cigarettes are in danger of hellfire. They simply cannot conceive of a reality outside of their narrowly defined definitions of morality.

It's not about what's rational, it's not about the heart, it's all a matter of the "RULES" - and it doesn't matter what those rules are. I know the most supposedly liberal people who have the most narrow minded viewpoint of what morality is - it's all about the ideology and what they want.

The churchgoing person in a wholesome middle class family who never has to deal with being poor and knocked up - well of course it's easy for them to point their finger and say that some teen girl who gets abortion is doing wrong. After all it's "evil" to them. It's something in their life they never has to deal with. For the person who is born hetero, who never looked at someone of the same sex and felt attraction - of COURSE they are going to go on a tirade about how homosexuality is perversion.

As human beings we are fundamentally self-centered. We develop "spheres", and whatever is outside our sphere is "the other" and therefore an anathema to us, and we can be downright vicious about it. It's one of the reasons that things like genocide, slavery, and murder exist in the first place.

They aren't trying to understand the characters, they are merely projecting their own life values ONTO the characters - and for people who are disgusted with the amount of horrible crimes in our society and the fact that our justice system is no longer working properly (it only serves the rich), someone like Dexter seems appealing. He is Batman with a butcher knife, here to take care of the ugly problems with a very easy solution that bypasses the complicated and often corrupt courts. So he can kill bad guys, and have this perfect relationship with a sister who is utterly devoted to him, and be a good dad, and we can all live vicariously through him.

Oh but when we complicate things, as such a character would be complicated, then "Oh no!"

People don't study up on this stuff at all. They remain not just accidentally ignorant, but WILLFULLY ignorant and I have no patience for them. I read a few posts on the internet by another one of you - not sure if it was Abby, Patrick, or Moony, but it was a brilliant if harsh, analysis of Deb and Dex. Someone pointed out that Dexter is a psychopath/sociopath and that Debra is a borderline narcissist.

And that psycho/sociopaths are extremely prone to incestuous behavior, as are narcissists. Now, whether Deb is really narcissistic at all, is of debate (I waver on that one because I like her so much) - but she definitely does have many of those traits.

Truthfully, the ONLY unrealistic thing about Debra and Dexter on this show, is that they haven't already slept together, or had an on and off sexual relationship from teenage years on.

    37. I don't have a problem with Incest. I'm fine with it on GoT, Arrested Development, etc. but Deb and Dex acted like a brother and sister throughout the series. Yes, They were close but there was never any hints of sexual attraction between the two, unless you read too much into things and over-interpret. The writers should have made it more clear that there was something going on between the two pre-s6 if they wanted us to buy it.

      Delete
    38. lol nice condescending comment. Unless you read too much into things. Maybe it was there, and you were too dense to see it all.

      Delete
    39. No. It wasn't in the writing. Maybe, Just Maybe a little bit of MCH's and Jennifer Carpenters chemistry leaked on screen but there wasn't anything in the dialogue that suggested anything sexual was going on. (unless you over-interpret things)

      Delete
    40. Oh knock it off w/the condescension. If you can't argue or debate w/o it. Then STFU.

Yes, they have chemistry, but it was in the writing. There relationship was written flirty in the beginning before he closed off/got obsessed more w/killing and there were things said that just don't illicit a normal brother/sister relationship and her constant need to connect with him or him to open. Was she wanted more than a brother had to offer. They never that close either.

    41. LOL Joe,

Everyone back in the pool until you pass psyche 101 !!!

Maybe, just maybe, the writers kept the thing in subtext BECAUSE they wanted some viewers to be surprised and then go "Oh yea, it all makes sense." And true, it did work with some people and they were surprised and then hit with revelation.

But what they probably should have accounted for is the ego factor of some fans. Everyone has to be a big shot, and nothing worse than being a big shot and missing something basic... so rather than just admit they had a blind spot, they have to salvage their pride and spew constant bullshit to save face.

It doesn't help that the producers focused so much on Rita's unhappiness with Dexter in Season 4, and so much on Lumen in Season 5 - that the Deb/Dex stuff was totally neglected. So for the viewers that REALLY got into Dexter in S4 (at least half of them it seems), that relationship would be the most lasting impression of Deb/Dex they would have, and the conversation in the car is about the only bit of subtext there was in S4.

It is true that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, but for the most part - guitars, cigars, snakes, and long knives - are phallic symbols, and when your foster sister looks dreamily into your eyes, discusses the sex noises she makes, and wants to know what sex noises your girlfriend makes, and falls madly in love with your biological brother who is ALSO a psycho serial killer, as well as the man that is a 60 year old good guy version of yourself - you don't have to "read into" jack shit.

I'd have an appropriate Deb quote here, but - I am playing nice.

    42. "and falls madly in love with your biological brother who is ALSO a psycho serial killer, as well as the man that is a 60 year old good guy version of yourself"

The writers clearly added the Deb/Brian stuff in for drama. Where are you even getting this Lundy stuff from? Deb chose Lundy cause he was like a father figure who actually payed attention to her, to assume anything else is just over-analyzing things. Deb talking about her sex life with Dexter doesn't mean anything. If they ever looked at each other with dreamy eyes it was because their chemistry was bleeding onscreen. You are starting to sound like a crazy/wishful shipper. I think I saw one of your other crazy comments where you said that the show would end with Deb having Dex's baby or something...

      Delete
    43. 6:33

I get it from the show, you know, from actually watching and paying attention to scenes in the show. Like, oh, Deb's dinner with her boyfriend in Season 2, or Lundy talking to Dexter about being a hunter in Season 4. Lundy is the person that Dexter might have been if he was not broken. The only similarity's between Lundy and Harry is their age. Harry was a womanizer and a tough guy cup, he was not a nerdy introspective FBI agent with a taste for higher culture.

Anyway, I could go on for hours, but it would all be wasted. As Joe says, you are adding nothing to the conversation aside from being condescending and doing the name calling thing - essentially acting the part of a sneering teenager who thinks they know so much more than grown ups.

If the best argument you have, is saying my comments are crazy, then you got nothing. Pack it in kid and go play somewhere else.

      Z

      Delete
    44. Of course they added the Deb/Brian stuff for drama. But it STILL is in the story you can't just dismiss the implications and what that relationship suggest about Debra and Dexter both. You can't just choose and pick piece of the story you have to look it as a whole.

Lundy was a blend of Harry and Dexter. It was made obvious in season 2 and 4. Debra and Dexter relationship was peculiar from the get go. Season 1 and 2 especially.

I don't know how old you are or how long you've watched the show. Please believe me when I say I'm not trying to be condescending but you've got to broaden your perspective a bit. Try to be more open.

    9. I have to agree with Patrick Bateman on that one - when you love someone that much, for your entire life, you can't erase it... You can try and that's what she'll probably do, but you can't succeed, not in a long term...
Btw love is not a thing of logic, we don't "decide" to love someone or stop loving them...

      Delete
    10. Especially, after the way she made her declaration to the therapist about how she always chose men who were opposite of Dexter or someone is exactly like him, and emotional moment of clarity of that - enough to say "cuz I'm in love with him, and she wants him to understand, and wants him to know it." That hits you to the core. In the moment that it was stated and how she said it. She also felt it was so deep she was ready to gamble on telling him - despite getting warned about his reaction. It would change their relationship forever. Doesn't dissolve. Anyone thinking otherwise you're just fooling yourself because you don't like it.

For me, only thing is will Dexter reciprocate the feelings and how long will it take. And if Hannah's character is first step to bringing it out in the open.

      Delete
    11. Joe,

Personally I don't have any doubt that Dexter will reciprocate Debra feelings. In a way he already does, even if he's not really aware of or understand it.

Because when I watched season 6, they really started to imply it through Dexter at first. Not Debra (I'm talking about season 6 only). For example, we pretty much never had a voice over from Dexter about Quinn but then in episode 602 it start.

Quinn and Dexter have a discussion about Debra and Quinn said something like "I don't want her to feel like she has to choose between you and me" (which sounds a bit weird when you think about it for a second because it implies that Quinn does sense some sort of deep bond between Dexter and Debra and view Dexter as a sort of rival for her affection) but the real killer is what Dexter tells us next in a voice over : "Because it is never going to BE you".

Me think one of the reason we didn't really get any voice over about Quinn before is because it would have been too revealing. Dexter jealousy and possessiveness and spiteful opinion of Quinn would have been out in the open so to speak and left no doubt at all about why he despise Quinn so much.

And then you have 607, the Nebraska episode and Brian who is a figment of Dexter imagination and a part of him says : "Debra Debra Debra... What is it with YOU and HER". And Dexter remains silent. That's very telling I thought. Because Dexter is unable to answer but a part of him obviously knows that his relationship with Debra is stretching the boundaries of a brother/sister relationship so much that he can't really define it.

And then the rest of the season dealed with Debra and her feelings and these little tidbits of peculiar reactions from Dexter were kind of drowned, since all the focus was directed at Debra. I always found it very telling that in the interviews at the end of the last season, the writers always talked about Debra's feelings but never quite adressed Dexter's. A bit cagey I thought since they did deliberately put these little suggestions and scenes in the episodes. But if they want to deal with Dexter's feelings this season they had to remain vague at first.

What I hope this season will deal with is Dexter reactions at being "ignored" and "dismissed" by Debra. How will he reacts if for once he's not the one giving the cold shoulder and being distant. If we'll see Debra attempt to keep her distance from Dexter while she deals whith all she has learned about him and how it will affect him. No more light discussions on the couch with beer, no more sister to barge in on him at all hours talking about a millions things. No more Debra to lean on to...

Because that relationship of theirs pretty much ended at the church.

Now it will evolve, give birth to a new monster of a relationship, completely dysfunctional but fascinating to watch and kind of beautiful too...

I kind of hope Dexter will be the one to have an epiphany this year and the one who makes the first move.^^

Anyway all the above are my personal views on things of course. I'm just super excited for this season, going to be amazing looks like.

Yea, that was one instance where Brian from the show aligned with Brian from the books.

In the books Brian goes "What is it with you and that GIRL?"
      Dexter: "She's my sister..."

  4. I like what Scott Buck says or hints at about the word 'love', especially through the medium that is Dexter.

I'm personally very interested to hear that this notion of 'love' is going to be explored through the warped world that is Dexter. It could get VERY interesting indeed.

I know some people didn't enjoy s6 for whatever reasons but I would say that that season about 'faith' or being in touch with some sense of spirituality or 'light' has set this season up (about love and how it affects people, the consequences) rather superbly. In my opinion.

also understood the entire sixth season that he wanted to be a good father, he spoke of it sincere feelings for Harrison, now no longer a good father?
