Michael C. Hall Is Not Willing to Continue Dexter: "The Season 8 Finale Will Be the Last"

Via nzherald.co.nz: Michael C Hall is no longer surprised when an A-list Hollywood star sidles up to him at a party and whispers in his ear a desire to be a serial killer. It happens all the time. "They have had two or three drinks and I wonder about their sincerity," Hall, the 40-year-old who plays a serial killer in the hit TV series Dexter, laughs.

The big time actors want to go head-to-head with Hall's character Dexter Morgan, a blood splatter analyst working for the Miami-Metro Police Department who secretly hunts and kills other murderers. "I've been amazed by some of the people who have said it,'' Hall adds. "It is flattering to have people of note lobby, at least casually, to be on the show.''

Hall will not say who the A-Listers are, or who he would like to see on the show in future episodes, but some Dexter guest stars include Jimmy Smits, Edward James Olmos, Jonny Lee Miller, Mos Def, Colin Hanks and the most chilling of all, John Lithgow, as the ultra-creepy Trinity Killer in season four.

"I would hesitate to say because, if I said, it may make it less of a possibility," Hall says of his guest star wish list. Read more after the jump...

North Carolina-born Hall has had a charmed TV career, beginning with being cast in 2001 as closeted homosexual David Fisher in Six Feet Under, an award-winning TV series following a dysfunctional family that runs a California funeral parlour. The show ran until 2005.

In 2006 Hall was cast as the lead in Dexter, won best actor Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for the role, and recently the US TV network that airs Dexter in America, Showtime, renewed Dexter for seasons seven and eight.

Hall laughs when it is pointed out death is a central theme in Six Feet Under and Dexter and the sets of both series are filled with dead bodies.

"Yeah, I'd love to do a comedy where nobody died,'' he giggles.

"It is not in my mission statement as an actor that I must always be surrounded by dead bodies.

"Look, the issue of life and death are fundamental.

"I'm thankful I have been spending time with material that is close to one of the fundamental roots to be a person.''

Hall says the season eight finale will be the last we see of Dexter, with the actor not willing to continue the show.

As for his prediction for how Dexter will bow out, he is keeping his cards close to his chest, although it appears Dexter may come to a grisly end just like his many victims.

"I do have an idea about how this story may end, but those decision are yet to be set in stone,'' Hall says.

"To be honest, it is difficult for me to foresee a happy ending for this character.''

  1. I guess playing Dex is getting old. But I cannot imagine anyone else...!!! C'mon Mike!!!!

  2. I think it will be good to end it at season 8. Don't want to ruin a shows legacy by going too long.

  3. Good decision. And also it would be great to see some drastic (for Dex) ending.

  4. Season 8 being the final season sounds like a wise decision! As for his next A-lister guest star...I hope is kiefer sutherland or christopher meloni!

    1. Christopher Meloni would make a fantastic villian for dexter. He is strong, smart and can throw out great one liners! They could take a storyline in so many different directions with him.

    2. that would be too much to take in haha. In a good way.

    3. or what about Christopher Walken?

  5. Regardless of the decision that the show will seemingly not continue after season eight.... lets just be thankful for the fact that Dexter has two more season and we as fans have two more years to see the story of Dexter continue to play out and possibly come to a definitive end.

  6. I am so thankful for the many seasons MCH has agreed to already, and I trust the writers that the final season will please us all and give us good closure. LONG LIVE THE DEX.

  7. i always hoped that Harrison should take over his work..... but i am just a sick dude i guess? since he was born in blood aswell as dexter.....

  8. To the Anonymous above me ---> although the idea of Harrison taking over Dex's activities might be an interesting twist to see, I think it would be a little bit dissappointing ending to such great series.

  9. i wonder what movies will Hall be after
    Dexter..
2 more seasons is wonderful idea even though it will be the end of the show.i am extremely glad they didnt finish on season 6th cose ...well you all know why :D fanservice haha

i i think it will have no exact end. just he finished another case and life goes on... because other end will be too tragic. and happy end is non-existent for such a situation.

  10. I was curious to see what would happen with Harrison, but I think ending it at eight seasons is probably the best decision. The writers and actors have done an amazing job so far, but after eight seasons, I imagine it would be hard to come up with story lines that are as good as what they've already done. I'll be sad to see the show gone, but happy to not see it diminish to shit like so many good television shows do.

  11. Even though i will miss watching dexter every sunday night, i think it will be a good decision to end. So sad to say it.I am a die hard fan.........

  12. It's all about the $$$$ folks . MCH is making what , just under a MILLION per ep on his current deal which is S7 and S8 . If showtime feels they need DEXTER on their line up card and are willing to pay Michael a bigger piece of the pie who's to say that it couldn't go to S9 ? It's all negotiating . Look at Charlie Sheen , before he got fired from 2.5 men , he said that he was finished with the show and had no intention of doing any more , than CBS and WB came and said here's the $1.6 million per ep you wanted .

I think 8 seasons is good for the show . But just because MCH apparently says he's done with DeXTER 2 years from now , doesn't mean it will happen . Things change all the time in Hollywood ;)

  13. I don't necessarily think that MCH is unwilling to continue... there is a quite for everything else in this article for what MCH said and none of him saying he is unwilling to continue. Maybe he just honestly thinks that it is best to end it at eight! Let's face it if he really wanted out he would have only agreed to one season and leave that as the end of the show... just my personal thoughts

  14. Let's wait till the fat lady sings. :)

  15. Well, Showtime Boss David Nevins did go on record saying that Michael's delay in signing up for 2 more seasons was not about the money, but that he wanted to know where the story was going to go, how it was going to all tie up. MCH must have realised Season 6 was patchy in quality. He more than the fans has been truly dedicated to keeping the integrity of the show intact. And for that to happen, the show needs to bow out gracefully.

  16. I just have a question: When can we expect a book by Michael C. Hall? I envision something titled along the lines of, "Memoirs of a Serial Killer: My Life as Dexter Morgan." It could be an autobiography about his experiences on the set of DEXTER. I would buy that up in a minute. Though, he's a private man, so it would probably never happen. That would be a special thing for the fans to have when the show is over. Hell, I would still read it if any of the cast members wrote it. I would just prefer it if Michael C. Hall wrote it. He is always well spoken in interviews and I imagine it would be just as good if he put it down on paper.

    1. Definitely! I would love this. He could make so many people happy by publishing a book.

  17. Bryan Cranston needs to play a role as a Dexter successor after he gets done with Breaking Bad. That'd be pretty awesome...

    1. Crantson will forever be remembered as the brilliant Walter White. Bringing him into some ridiculous money grabbing Dexter "spin-off" would be a disgrace to Bryan's magnificant talent and a spit in the face for all true Dexter fans.

  18. Why does he have to die? why can't he do a movie in a couple of years & pop up somewhere he is needed?

    1. C0s that would be shit.
we need a conclusion!!! not just waffle on like he never gets caught and everything is perfect. U forget what a macabre premise this show has. it cannot have a happy fucking ending.

  19. IT IS THE BEST SHOW EVER.
BUT JUST LIKE A RELATIONSHIP,IT WILL HAVE TO END AND WE NEED TO MOVE ON EVEN THOUGH WE LOVE IT.
MICHAEL C.HALL HAS INSPIRED ALL OF US TILL THE PRESENT SEASON.
EVEN IF HE STOPS,HE WILL ALWAYS BE A GREAT ACTOR.

  20. I wish for a spin-off with Harrison as the main character and probably with Dexter as his accomplice "ghost" father.I think it would be a great show, even if Dexter doesn't show up considering he may not want to be involved with the character anymore. And about DEXTER having two more seasons, as far as I'm concerned, it's a great idea.I am sure it won't be disappointing.

  21. They say Hall wont be continuing... what if they decide to kill him off at the end of season eight and let Harrison take over the show, after all... He was laying in Rita's blood... almost an exact parallel to Dexters past.
Either way, there will be no happy ending for this series, and thats sad to say.

    1. well they couldnt really call the show Dexter?

  22. I would rather they not continue with Harrison. Dexter should end with the resolution of Dexter Morgan's dilemma, not the passing on of it to Harrison because he keeled over and died.

  24. people saying it should continue with Harrison, get fucking real. This show i called Dexter right?
Frankly 8 seasons is too many, the plot devises used, such as his voice over(which is what made the show so uniquely brilliant in the beginning) are starting to wear thin. This was most evident in season 6. I believe 6 should have been the last season. 5 should have delt with the fallout from Rita's death properly, with a big revelation at the end of it, then season 6 should have concluded the series. Why they felt they needed to stretch it out over 3 more seasons is beyond me and is not in tone with this show. Dexter is the kind of show, although i love it, that can really become stale & actually quite boring if no real action or character development is happening. thats not saying i want there to be a kill room every ep, no no no, but there is not enough intelligent & symbolic writing these days to keep me invested if nothing major is happening. An example of this is episode 6.08 'Sin of Omission'. It became abundantly clear during this ep that the writers were going to drag this out as long as they could. Anyway, having said that, i will clarify that i was extremely excited by the S06 finale & truely believe that this opens up many exciting doors. If the writers say they have a clear "3 year plan" then i must trust that there wont be any more of this simple and prolonged writing that has plauged the past 2 seasons.
I am anxious to see where the writers go now that the shoe has dropped. Had the last 5 minutes of S06 not happened, i well & truely would have lost faith in this series going forward. MCH definitely has the right idea, no more than 8 seasons. No doubt.
p.s Louis is hopefully going to be a major presence in the season(s) to come. He was the most exciting part of S06 by far, cant wait to see where is story arc goes :D

  25. I think an excellent villian would be Mickey Rourke - as a swamp dweller that ventures into the big city for "entertainment". The Everglades is a spooky scenario to begin with, then add Dexter and it should be great.

I think in season 7, the big bad will get less "face time". The writers will have to expend lots of screen time on addressing the Deb Knows Situation.

Damn, I wish we didn't have to wait so long.

  26. I think they should cast Jimmy and James the father and son from S&
S Logging on the History Channel's Ax Men as the main bads for season 7. Kind of a comedic father/son Deliverance story arc.

  28. I want to see Giancarlo Esponsito (aka Gus from Breaking Bad) on the show. But I think he should play a cop, like Lundy's replacement or something.

  29. Since House is done after this season, it wouldn't be a bad idea to try and nab Hugh Laurie for something. I think his comedy background can actually work pretty well into Dexter.
