Dexter Is the Most Downloaded TV Show of 2011!

Via torrentfreak.com: With 2011 nearing its end, today we begin our annual look at the most-pirated entertainment titles across various categories, starting with TV-shows. Dexter comes out on top this year, followed by HBO’s debut series Game of Thrones. Although the years of exponential growth in download numbers have passed, episodes of the top TV-shows are still shared among millions of people.

With 3,620,000 downloads per single episode, Dexter has the honor of becoming the most pirated TV-show of the year.

Despite the fact that Dexter and runner-up Game of Thrones have more downloads than television viewers in the US, the overall number of TV-show downloads is leveling off.

Below we have compiled a list of the most downloaded TV-shows (single episode) of 2011, together with the viewer average for TV in the US. The data for the top 10 is collected by TorrentFreak from several sources, including reports from all public BitTorrent trackers.

  1. Well I pay for Showtime but am overseas, so if I want to see it, that's the best way. In addition, in some countries it runs weeks later in the US.

  2. I'll admit it. Since i don't live in USA and since i don't have the channel that broadcast Dexter here in my country (FX). I >>watch<< the show on a streaming website. I don't download it, i just watch it, most of the times on the same day that the episode originally aired on Showtime. I know that this is not right, but...what can i do? I love DEXTER!!! (Please, don't kill me, Dexter...)

  3. I guess its because the most fans who are living outside the USA dont want to wait months until the DVD is released...
So I have to ask, why don't they offer a Online-stream (I'm sure a lot of people would pay for) for people all around the world...

  4. I think plenty of fans in the US download or stream illegally as well. People who don't have Showtime don't want to wait a year till downloads become available, and more and more people just watch "television" on the web and don't have a cable television provider. If you could download or stream current Showtime (or HBO) programs for small fee, $2.99 or something, more people would download legally.

  5. This makes me smile considering all the really loud haters this season telling everyone how awful this season is. Guess they can shut up now. :)

  7. Steve Jobs had the right idea with i-Tunes. He realized most people did not want to break the law, but the content providers were not creating sound legal alternatives. Showtime Australia is a joke: they are only about to screen episode 2 of Dexter!

Haters, there's a reason there's only a handful of them.

  9. The TV suits need to get with the times and stop being so stupid and stubborn with their business models. Sell each episode the day after it airs on iTunes for 2.99. Meet the obvious demand. We will not wait for your windows because we don't have to. And yes you can compete with free. iTunes and Netflix do it just fine. People will pay to avoid the risk of downloading a virus, to avoid the annoying ads on streaming sites, and to feel like they're doing the morally correct thing. But these TV suits aren't even giving us the option to pay. It's irrational and absurd.

  12. For me it is fatuous to buy something when I can download it. And almost all movies are expensive to buy but available for downloading. :) I sincerely believe that Showtime would not suffer a lot if I watch some episodes free of charge.

Anyway, there are the merest chance of watching 'Dexter' in original in Russia otherwise. :)

  13. I'm from Argentina and got all previous seaons in DVD. But as it was told I can't wait so long to watch it on FOX (season 6 it's starting by the end of January 2012) the Itunes option will be the best one to meet our demands all over the world. They should see that this a TV serie so addicted to a lot of people globally and not only in the states. By the way.. if someone got a relying stream for tonight's finale, please let me know :).
