Julia Stiles Reveals: "This Is Not Your Typical Romance"

Read below an interview of Julia Stiles about her character on Dexter! (It contains spoilers)

We love Julia Stiles. And we love Julia Stiles on Dexter. So as much as you're going to want to hate the new lady in Dexter's life, we promise it's safe to give this new girl a chance! She's not Lila 2.0 (you know, that psycho "other woman" from season two), and she's not a replacement for the late, great Rita (Julie Benz). We recently caught up with Julia to discuss her unique new role, and she told us that the newest Dexter character is definitely more complicated than she seems at first glance:

Welcome to the wonderful world of Dexter. Tell us a little about your character, Lumen.
Julia Stiles: She comes into Dexter's life, and she's very mysterious. You only slowly learn where she's come from, and it's clear that she's experienced a major trauma and has a really hard time moving past that and getting on with her life.

How would you describe your relationship with Dexter? Is he already moving on from Rita with this new woman?
J.S.: Lumen is not a replacement for Rita. The relationship that she has with Dexter is very unconventional. It's intimate, but this is not your typical romance that you would see anywhere else. Their connection is one that is really profound. Also, her name is very significant in terms of what she brings to Dexter's life. [Editor's note: The word lumen means "a measure of the power of light perceived by the human eye," so at this point we're choosing to believe that Julia's character is instrumental in Dexter's healing process.]

We know that Lumen sticks around for the rest of season five. How quickly does this unconventional relationship with Dexter develop?
J.S.: There's a lot that happens between Dexter and Lumen. You can definitely say that it's charged; it develops.

Before Lumen's captor Boyd (Shawn Hatosy) was killed last night, he said that he was actually helping the women he had murdered—which would have soon included your character. Should we trust Lumen, or is she hiding something?
J.S.: Lumen does have a secret that she's carrying around. But I'm convinced that I'm going to have some big surprise thrown at me about her in the next final three episodes. The writers are very good at keeping everything a secret.

Final question: Do Dexter and Lumen fall in love?
J.S.: It depends on your definition of love. There are many different ways to show love that can be interpreted in many different ways. Plus, emotions with Dexter are already so unconventional that it's hard to put the word love in there.

What do you think of Julia? Or better yet, what to you think of Lumen?! We're not sure we trust her yet, but we're definitely sticking around to find out more. Don't miss Dexter Sunday's at 9 p.m. on Showtime.
