Why Dexter: Resurrection Had to Skip New York Mets Gear and Use Off-Brand Smart Glasses for Its New Villain

Five Borough Killer actor Dan Stevens recently shared some behind-the-scenes insights into what he wasn't allowed to wear or use for the role.

The second season of Dexter: Resurrection wasted little time introducing a modern serial killer. One of the most unusual things about Dan Stevens' narcissistic big bad is the technology he uses to record and share his crimes. However, bringing this part of the character to the screen wasn't quite as simple as the production team might have expected.

Stevens plays Lucas Stark, better known as the Five Borough Killer, who actually uses smart glasses to record his murders before sharing the disturbing and shocking footage with unsuspecting people through AirDrop.

The actor has now revealed that the team behind Season 2 came across a few problems when trying to find the right pair.

Smart Glasses Brands Didn't Want to Be Associated With a Dexter Villain

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Stevens explained that he actually worked closely with the costume and props departments to pick the glasses Lucas would wear. The team eventually settled on a slightly unusual-looking pair, but some manufacturers weren't really interested in having their products associated with a serial killer.

As a result, the production had to turn to what Stevens described as "budget, off-brand Chinese" smart glasses, which, as it turned out, didn't always work as expected.

The New York Mets Also Refused to Be Associated With Lucas Stark

The smart glasses weren't the only part of Lucas' look that caused problems. The New York Mets also didn't want such an evil and sadistic serial killer wearing their team's logo on a hat or hoodie.

What is interesting is that this actually comes from a team that famously partnered with Paramount+ in 2025 to promote the first season of Dexter: Resurrection, with David Zayas serving as the face of the campaign.

Stevens explained that the production chose Mets blue for Lucas' clothing, but the baseball team wasn't willing to let the character wear official merchandise. As he put it, "the Mets didn’t want to have anything to do with Lucas," so the team had to suggest the connection through the colors and not the actual Mets hat or hoodie.

Stevens also added that Lucas was deliberately designed to look like "a very average Joe" who could easily pass unnoticed on the streets of New York.

The actor explained that the creative team wanted him to "blend into the crowd" while committing extraordinarily horrific acts, keeping audiences from seeing just how dangerous he was right away. That contrast is a big part of what makes the character so unsettling.

The approach was already clear in the Season 2 premiere, "Risky Business." The Five Borough Killer introduced himself by calling the NYPD and announcing that he would kill someone at a baseball game the following day.

As a result officers were sent to monitor the area around the New York Mets' stadium in case the threat was real. But when the game was cancelled due to the rain, the FBK turned on the smart glasses, approached a radnom young woman in the stadium parking lot, and said, "Nobody cares" before actually shooting her.

Considering the disturbing way Lucas uses his smart glasses to carry out and share his crimes, it's perhaps understandable that neither the glasses manufacturers nor the Mets wanted their brands associated with him.
