Eric Stonestreet Pitched Dexter: Resurrection Season 2's Most Brutal Scene Way Before Scripting Began

The former Modern Family star had a specific scenario in mind long before work on Season 2's scripts even began, and it eventually made its way onto the screen.

The Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 premiere saved one of its biggest moments for near the end: Dexter Morgan's brutal confrontation with Al Walker. But the idea behind that fight came much earlier than fans might expect, and it was Eric Stonestreet who first pitched it.

The actor suggested turning Dexter's inevitable showdown with Rapunzel into a long, brutal battle between two middle-aged men while Season 1 was still filming.

Eric Stonestreet Pitched the Brutal Fight During Season 1

The behind-the-scenes story was actually revealed by executive producer and writer Scott Reynolds during his recent appearance on the Icons of Fright podcast.

Reynolds explained that the idea first came up in spring of 2025, while the team was filming Season 1, Episode 8. At that point, Al Walker (Stonestreet) had managed to escape Dexter's kill room for reasons that, of course, had nothing to do with knowing Dexter's secret. But Stonestreet was already thinking about what could happen if his character returned for another season.

Reynolds recalled: "We were sitting on set, and Eric Stonestreet comes up to me. He's like, 'If I'm going to come back next season...' And I'm like, 'I mean, yeah, Dexter's got to take you out.' He goes, 'What if it's not a normal kill? What if it's a brutal, knock-down, drag-out... two middle-aged guys just battling? Like a five-minute-long sequence?'"

"And then you forget, his character's a strong dude. He's a strangler. So, as a result of that, that just got in our heads, and I went up to Clyde Phillips, thinking this could be really great."

Reynolds then brought the suggestion to Michael C. Hall, who also has creative input on the show's scripts. Hall actually agreed, and Stonestreet's pitch eventually became the showdown we saw in the Season 2 premiere. Of course, we already knew who would win, but that didn't make the fight any less intense.

The Fight Was Pitched Five Months Before Season 2's Writers' Room Opened

What's particularly interesting is that Stonestreet came up with the idea long before the team began developing the second season's story. The conversation happened in May 2025, while Season 1 was still filming, whereas the Season 2 writers' room didn't officially open until October 2025.

Reynolds also revealed that although the scene was supposed to take place in Pennsylvania, it was actually filmed in Nyack, a village just outside New York City. "It was just a crazy, crazy, fun night," Reynolds said.

It's always great to hear these kinds of behind-the-scenes stories, especially when they show how much actors can really contribute to their characters' stories.
