The second season of Dexter: Resurrection is here, and its premiere made it clear that Dexter Morgan is going to face two very different antagonists this time around. On one side, there's the New York Ripper, played by Brian Cox. On the other, there's the Five Borough Killer, portrayed by Dan Stevens.
The Season 2 premiere wasted no time introducing Stevens' character. In an early subway scene, he politely offers his seat to an elderly woman who is left standing. But that good deed doesn't actually last long, as a glimpse of his true nature soon follows. Using a disposable phone, he calls the police and warns them about a murder he's about to commit.
Technology is already shaping the Five Borough Killer's story, especially through his smart glasses, which he uses to record his murders. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly following the premiere, Stevens opened up about the unusual device and explained why it almost feels like a villain of its own.
Stevens pointed out how the glasses make the killer feel very much like a product of 2026. He also noted that smart glasses have actually become a controversial topic, with people already having their own opinions about them.
As the actor put it, "the glasses are almost like a villain in themselves." He added that the idea of people committing murders with them gives audiences another reason to dislike the specific kind of technology.
Stevens also revealed what initially attracted him to the role. Although he had been given a rough idea of where the character's story was heading, he didn't really know the full details until the scripts started coming in. What caught his attention was the killer's delusion and the twisted narrative he had built around himself.
The smart glasses were another big part of the appeal. Stevens actually joked that the character gives audiences yet another reason to hate them, saying, "as if we needed another reason to hate smart glasses."
He also explained that, while the way the Five Borough Killer murders his victims isn't necessarily that different from what we've seen other villains do in the past, the way he records and distributes the footage adds another creepy element to the character. In Stevens' view, this gives the killer a unique dimension.
This is without a doubt the most technology-focused villain we've seen in the Dexter franchise. He uses a disposable phone to contact the NYPD and create panic before getting rid of the device. He then takes things a step further by using AirDrop to share footage of his crimes, ruining the day of unsuspecting people in public places.
It'll definitely be interesting to see how the show actually develops this storyline throughout the rest of Season 2.
