Where do things stand right now regarding the original soundtrack of the first season?
One of the strongest reasons the original Dexter series continues to be praised all these years later lies not only in its characters or the storytelling, but in its unforgettable original soundtrack. The music actually played a huge role in shaping the show’s identity, and to this day, iconic compositions by the late Daniel Licht remain one of the easiest ways to spark nostalgia.
In recent years, tracks like the legendary “Blood Theme” have found new life across social media, frequently used in short-form videos and edits that are most of the times irrelevant to the series.
The latest chapters of the Dexterverse, New Blood, Original Sin, and Resurrection, present a very different scenario musically. Following Daniel Licht’s tragic passing in 2017, the franchise had no choice but to find a new composer.
Starting in 2021, when the first revival was announced, Pat Irwin stepped in to carry the torch, and he has done an impressive job capturing the tone of the series. His work has been especially effective in both the prequel and the most recent sequel, balacning between honoring the past, but also defining a new musical era.
Across its ten-episode first season, Dexter: Resurrection introduced a wide range of new original score pieces that are atmospheric, and actually fitting to this new chapter of Dexter’s story in New York City. At the same time, familiar tracks from the original series were woven in, along with several compositions originally created for Dexter: Original Sin.
Traditionally, soundtracks like these are released as official albums through record labels once a season concludes. Dexter as a series has actually seen this happen before, so it’s natural for fans to wonder what to expect when it comes to the music of Dexter: Resurrection. Now that five months have passed since the season finale aired, many have been asking us in our social media whether there is any update on a potential soundtrack release.
Unfortunately, the news is not encouraging. According to what Dexter Daily has learned, there are currently no plans to release a Dexter: Resurrection soundtrack album anytime soon. This means that Pat Irwin’s original compositions from the season remain unavailable through official channels, at least for now.
The situation actually mirrors what happened with Dexter: Original Sin. Despite the prequel wrapping up its run over a year ago, its soundtrack has yet to receive an official release. That is particularly disappointing for many of us, as Irwin’s work on Original Sin was especially amazing, often paying subtle homage to Daniel Licht’s classic tunes.
So for the time being, it appears there are no soundtrack release plans for either Dexter: Original Sin or Dexter: Resurrection. What about you? Is there a specific track from either series that is still stuck in your head and that you’d love to hear released in full?
