Did Dexter: Original Sin’s Cancellation Impact Dexter: Resurrection? Showrunner Breaks Silence

Could the prequel’s cancellation have any impact on the sequel series?

As fans eagerly wait for Paramount’s official announcement regarding a Season 2 renewal for Dexter: Resurrection, many are also holding out hope for a miracle: the potential un-cancellation of Dexter: Original Sin. A double renewal of both shows may feel like wishful thinking, but for longtime followers of the Dexter franchise, anything still seems possible.

During a recent appearance on the Dissecting Dexter podcast, showrunner Clyde Phillips opened up about how Paramount’s recent merger with Skydance disrupted his ambitious plans for the franchise. Phillips revealed that former Paramount boss Chris McCarthy had big ideas for expanding the so-called Dexter-verse.

“He wanted me to be his new Taylor Sheridan,” Phillips explained, referencing the creator of Yellowstone and its sprawling network of spinoffs on Paramount+. He said that they plotted out “a couple of years of this,” and were looking forward to add new old characters.

Unfortunately, those carefully laid plans were derailed. Not only was Dexter: Original Sin abruptly cancelled, but the Trinity Killer prequel is now in serious danger of being shelved indefinitely.

Why Dexter: Resurrection Remains Paramount’s Focus

When networks reshuffle priorities after mergers, it’s not uncommon for surviving shows to evolve—sometimes gaining larger budgets or reworked storylines when companion series are cut. Following the late-August cancellation of Original Sin, industry insiders widely reported that Paramount made the decision to allow the creative team to focus their energy on Dexter: Resurrection.

But according to Phillips, that shift hasn’t changed the main show’s creative direction one bit. When asked if Original Sin’s cancellation affected the writing or production of Dexter: Resurrection, Phillips was crystal clear: “Not in any way at all,” he said.

He even offered a striking metaphor to describe the relationship between the two projects:

“They’re two different beasts living in the same zoo. We’re going to take Resurrection where we intended to take it, and Original Sin’s unfortunate cancellation will not impact what we’re doing for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2.”

Will Original Sin Characters Appear in Resurrection?

Fans wondering whether Original Sin actors might appear in flashbacks or surprise cameos have reason to stay hopeful. Phillips didn’t rule out the possibility:

“I can’t say no to that,” he teased. “Sometimes it occurs to me in the writers’ room or in editing, so I’m not saying no to anything.”

Final Thoughts: The Waiting Game Continues

It’s now been two weeks since the Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 finale, and the silence from Paramount is deafening. While the network may simply be finalizing details before making an announcement, some fans believe the delay could be tied to ongoing discussions about the larger Dexter franchise, including the faint possibility of reviving Original Sin.

For now, all eyes remain on Paramount to give the green light.
