Michael C. Hall Explores Dexter’s Return in New Showtime Featurette ‘Resurrection Rewind’

The actor teased a 'successful' relationship between Dexter and Harrison in this new chapter.

Production has officially wrapped on Dexter: Resurrection, and to celebrate this milestone and build anticipation ahead of the series premiere, Showtime has launched an exciting new behind-the-scenes featurette series titled "Resurrection Rewind."

This video series dives deep into the world of Dexter Morgan, blending nostalgia with anticipation. Returning cast members reflect on past seasons of the original Dexter and Dexter: New Blood, while teasing what’s to come in this highly anticipated revival.

Michael C. Hall Kicks Things Off in Episode One

The inaugural episode of Resurrection Rewind puts the spotlight on none other than Michael C. Hall, the iconic face behind Dexter Morgan. In this intimate featurette, Hall explores Dexter’s evolution over the decades and shares how the character has grown—and aged—since his last appearance.

"The biggest difference playing Dexter now versus previous seasons is... he's older!" the actor laughs, offering a light-hearted take on Dexter's return and acknowledging the time that's passed since the series first premiered.

Revisiting the Ending of Dexter: New Blood

Fans are still talking about the emotionally charged and polarizing finale of Dexter: New Blood. Hall revisits those final moments, where Dexter’s journey appeared to come to a dramatic and deadly end:

"We last saw Dexter on the frozen forest floor in Iron Lake. We had every reason to believe that that was the end for him. He was bleeding out from a gunshot wound inflicted by his son that he pretty much inspired his son to take."

Dexter's Transformation & Fatherhood

In the featurette, Hall also dives into Dexter’s ongoing transformation—not just as a killer, but as a complex man grappling with emotional depth, identity, and fatherhood.

"I think Dexter has evolved from the beginning to someone who is increasingly unable to draw clear lines between the life that he simulates and his real self," Hall explains.

"It starts with the discovery that his brother is out there, and that exploits his desire to have real connection. He evolves by having more and more substantial relationships. He becomes a father, something that I think he never could have imagined for himself when we first meet him."

He continues, highlighting Dexter’s inner conflict and emotional costs:

"He has been struggling with the collateral damage associated, not with killing people, but his trying to have a life at the same time and have real relationships. Those are the things that have cost him."

"And I think in this new season, while he does still have some very real relationships, namely his relationship to his son, he's attempting maybe more successfully than he has up to this point, you know, this new lease on life to put those walls back up a little more firmly."

Is Dexter Really Meant to Be Alive?

Perhaps the most intriguing takeaway from Hall’s interview is his belief in Dexter’s continued purpose:

"He's a guy who literally has been given a second lease on life. And I think things happen over the course of the season that reveal to him in terms of his perception of the world that he is meant to still be here. Things reveal themselves that would make it difficult for him to argue otherwise."
