The former Dexter star revealed whether she's returning, and not everyone will be happy.
Dexter: Resurrection, the highly anticipated sequel to Dexter: New Blood, has officially been in production for two months, with filming taking place in New York City.
So far, Michael C. Hall is confirmed to reprise his iconic role as Dexter Morgan, alongside returning cast members David Zayas (Angel Batista), Jack Alcott (Harrison Morgan), and James Remar (Harry Morgan). However, one major fan-favorite character won’t be making a comeback.
Jennifer Carpenter Breaks Her Silence on Dexter: Resurrection Return
While Showtime has yet to announce additional returning actors, Jennifer Carpenter—who played Debra Morgan throughout Dexter (seasons 1-8) and Dexter: New Blood—has officially confirmed she will not be reprising her role in the upcoming series.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Carpenter revealed her decision to step away from the Dexter franchise:
"I am pretty focused where I am, and I feel like I've completed that box. I'm proud of it. I hope that they're having a wonderful time," she said, referring to the cast and crew. "And I'm so happy for the fans to have more to chew on."
With this, Dexter: Resurrection will mark the first season in the franchise’s history without Debra Morgan—news that will surely disappoint many longtime fans.
While Carpenter won’t be returning, another key character from the original series is making a long-awaited comeback. James Remar, who was absent from Dexter: New Blood, is officially reprising his role as Harry Morgan’s ghost in Dexter: Resurrection.
Remar was recently spotted on set in New York City alongside Michael C. Hall, confirming his return. His presence is particularly notable since Debra took over the “voice of reason” role in New Blood—a role that now seems to be reverting to Harry in the upcoming series.
