Could there be more Iron Lake Dexter Morgan in the Dexter prequel?
January 9 will mark three years since the finale of Dexter: New Blood, which became Showtime’s most-watched episode ever. While the series and its finale were celebrated as a success by those involved, including Paramount+, the ending left many fans deeply dissatisfied—a sentiment that showrunner Clyde Phillips continues to acknowledge.
Fast-forward to today, and the Dexter franchise is taking a fresh direction. Dexter’s death has been undone, and the story is getting another opportunity for a conclusive ending with Dexter: Resurrection. Filming for the sequel series begins in the first week of January 2025, and it will follow Dexter Morgan surviving Harrison’s gunshot—teased in last week’s premiere episode of Dexter: Original Sin.
Although Original Sin is a prequel, the pilot opens with Michael C. Hall’s Dexter being rushed to a hospital in Iron Lake, where doctors successfully save his life. This unexpected scene not only ties into the events of New Blood but also works metaphorically as “flashes before his eyes.”
Fans were surprised to see Hall onscreen in the prequel, especially since he was initially announced as only the narrator, voicing the inner thoughts of young Dexter, played by Patrick Gibson. This twist serves as an exciting bridge, making the wait for Dexter: Resurrection a bit more bearable.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Clyde Phillips confirmed that Hall’s brief appearance in the pilot will be his only one in Original Sin.
While 50-year-old Dexter won’t appear in the remaining nine episodes of Original Sin, Phillips reassures fans that the prequel is packed with nods to the original series. “If people like Easter eggs, this show is an Easter egg hunt,” Phillips teased. “We’ll finish a script, and someone will suggest adding a little detail that fans will go nuts over—and we do it. It’s so much fun.”
Although the update about Hall’s limited role in Original Sin may disappoint some fans, there’s still a possibility he could return in flash-forwards, especially since the season coincides with the beginning of production for Dexter: Resurrection. Phillips may be holding back on revealing everything, saving some surprises for the Original Sin Season 1 finale.
