The original Dexter series became known for bringing dead characters back for brief ghostly appearances, and that tradition continued in its spinoffs, with the most recent example being Dexter: Resurrection. Season 1 brought back a bunch of characters from the OG series as part of Dexter’s inner landscape, including dream sequences and visions.
Of course, there are some characters who have every reason to return in the same capacity but never actually did. Now, two familiar faces have suddenly caught the attention of fans again, and there may be a good reason for it.
Two OG Characters Could Be Coming Back
We’re specifically talking about two female characters who had a major impact on Dexter during the first half of the original series, but have never returned to the franchise in more than 15 years.
Those two characters are Rita Morgan, played by Julie Benz, and Lila West, played by Jaime Murray.
When it comes to Benz especially, both fans and the actress herself have questioned why she never received an actual call from the Dexter team to reprise her role in recent years. Now, her latest connection to the franchise has some fans wondering whether Rita could finally make another appearance.
And she’s not the only one. Jaime Murray has also resurfaced in the Dexterverse, leading to speculation that both actresses could have a secret connection to Resurrection Season 2.
It All Goes Back to "Dexter's Kill Room"
The speculation comes from their recent appearances in the official YouTube series Dexter’s Kill Room.
Julie Benz appeared alongside Erik King in Episode 4 of Season 3, which was the first time she had appeared in a Dexter project since 2010, excluding her appearance at the Season 8 premiere red carpet in Los Angeles in 2013.
The same goes for Jaime Murray. The last time she appeared on Dexter was in 2007, while her last public Dexter-related appearance or involvement also came at the Season 8 premiere in 2013.
Her Dexter’s Kill Room episode alongside C.S. Lee caught the attention of fans, especially because of how long it had been since Murray had been involved with the franchise.
With both actresses now appearing in an official Dexter project after years away, some fans have actually started wondering whether these appearances could be more than simple promotional cameos.
But... How Could Rita and Lila Return?
Many of you might be wondering how, or even what could trigger, the return of these two women in the sophomore season.
That part is actually impossible to know without seeing what the Resurrection writing team has planned. The series has already shown that dead characters can return in unexpected ways, giving the writers a lot of creative options.
Still, there is currently no confirmation that either Julie Benz or Jaime Murray will appear in Season 2. For now, their potential return remains speculation.
Julie Benz Has Never Hidden Her Disappointment
Although Murray has remained relatively quiet about her role as Lila for many years, Benz has continued to talk about her four-season run on Dexter as a series regular. Her shocking exit from the show is always the biggest topic among fans, and last year, the actress openly expressed her frustration about not receiving a call for Resurrection Season 1, particularly after seeing how many other OG characters were brought back.
Now that Dexter is heading toward its 20th anniversary, the timing could be very interesting if that finally happens.
Whether Rita and Lila actually return remains to be seen, but after more than 15 years away from the franchise, their recent appearances in Paramount+’s Dexter YT series have definitely given fans hope.
