Fan reaction to a modern-day Miami “what if” episode was overwhelmingly positive.
Have you ever caught yourself wondering how life might have turned out if just one thing had gone differently? Audiences have always been drawn to stories that show a different version of events. And it is actually the kind of concept that would feel right at home in a series like Dexter, even if only for a self-contained episode.
That’s where our latest April Fools’ concept came from. While rewatching Dexter Season 4, the idea naturally took shape, and on April 1st, the one day of the year where a little deception is expected, we shared a fictional but also carefully thought-out scenario.
The premise imagined that, ahead of Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, the producers would mark the 20th anniversary of the original series with a special “what if” episode. This hypothetical bonus episode would actually revisit a modern-day Miami, resurrecting every original main cast (Doakes, Rita, Debra, LaGuerta, and Batista) in an alternate reality where events unfolded very differently.
Of course, we knew from the start the concept felt almost too perfect for Dexter, which also meant some fans might be disappointed once they realized it wasn’t real (and we’re sorry for that). Even so, we decided to go ahead with it anyway.
And while a portion of readers immediately suspected the truth, the overall reaction was overwhelmingly positive. The response across Dexter Daily and our social media platforms made it clear that fans are genuinely excited by the idea of exploring alternate timelines within Dexter.
In fact, part of the intention behind the article was to put that idea out into the world in a meaningful way. By presenting it in detail, we hoped it might catch the attention of the creative team behind Dexter: Resurrection. And by presenting it as if it were truly happening, we were actually able to capture genuine reactions from fans, exactly as we hoped.
While a 20th anniversary episode would have been the perfect opportunity, especially with Season 2’s premiere timeline aligning, the reality is that production schedules and of course budgets make something like this unlikely in the immediate future.
Still, with plans for Dexter: Resurrection to continue beyond its second season, the concept could absolutely be revisited later on. Even without a milestone anniversary to justify its existense, a “what if” episode actually remains a possibility.
It’s also worth noting that Clyde Phillips and others involved with the franchise are aware of the discussions and feedback shared on Dexter Daily, as well as the fan conversations about the series. So the idea may not be as far-fetched as it seems.
This year’s April Fools’ story ended up generating far more attention than we expected. While it leaned more into realism than humor, especially compared to last year’s attempt, it actually served a valuable purpose, which was that it highlighted what fans want to see from future seasons of Dexter: Resurrection.
Imagining a version of Dexter Morgan as a fully successful serial killer who manages to avoid devastating consequences for himself and those around him, opens the door to an exciting narrative. Taking place in modern Miami, with the original cast returning, it would become one of the most stand out and most memorable in the entire series.
