Fans Furious After Lost Dexter: Original Sin Storylines Revealed — Young Doakes Among Them

The revelations about the plans for the prequel only deepened fans’ disappointment.

Next week marks one month since Dexter: Original Sin was officially axed by Paramount, yet the fight to save the highly anticipated prequel is far from over. The official petition continues to gain momentum, closing in on 95,000 signatures from fans worldwide who refuse to let the project die quietly.

And now, fresh revelations from series creator Clyde Phillips have given fans even more reason to feel both heartbroken and angry about what could have been.

In an article shared yesterday here on Dexter Daily, Phillips revealed several exciting storylines that were already being mapped out for the future of Dexter: Original Sin. According to him, Season 2 would have explored more of Brian Moser’s dark journey, while future seasons would introduce younger versions of fan-favorite characters like James Doakes, the sharp, no-nonsense detective who always sensed something was off about Dexter, and of course Tom Matthews.

The mere mention of Doakes, arguably one of the most iconic and most memed characters in Dexter history, hit fans especially hard. The thought of exploring his early years alongside a young Dexter was thrilling—yet now feels like a stolen opportunity. Across social media, fans have been voicing their frustration, calling the cancellation a huge mistake.

On X and Facebook, comments poured in: “We were robbed,” “What a major loss,” “We need this so bad.”

Many directed their anger at Paramount, demanding the company reconsider and reverse the cancellation, which was announced shortly after the Paramount–Skydance merger—despite the fact that Original Sin had already been renewed back in April.

During the latest episode of the Dissecting Dexter podcast, Phillips opened up about how he found out the prequel was being canceled. His honesty struck a chord with fans:

“It wasn’t handled well, and I am not happy about it,” Phillips admitted. He then said that he received a difficult phone call late at night, during which he was told that Dexter: Original Sin was suddenly being reversed. He had already informed both the writers and the actors about the renewal, only to find out that the decision had been undone, all while Dexter: Resurrection was moving forward as expected.

Of course, not everyone in the fandom was devastated. A small minority of viewers expressed relief, arguing that prequels risk disrupting timelines or creating messy retcons. However, Phillips had already promised that Dexter: Original Sin would seamlessly lead directly into the pilot of the original series, staying true to the canon fans know and love.

For now, the fate of Dexter: Original Sin hangs in the balance. While officially canceled, the possibility of an uncancellation still exists—especially if the new leadership at Paramount decides to listen to the passionate fanbase. Stranger things have happened in Hollywood, and the power of fan movements should never be underestimated.

If you want to see Dexter: Original Sin brought back to life, keep signing and sharing the petition. Every voice counts, and with the fanbase rallying louder than ever, there’s still hope that this prequel could rise from the dead.
