The series premiere of Dexter: Original Sin is brimming with unforgettable songs!
Dexter: Original Sin has finally arrived! The first episode, released on December 13, has fans buzzing with excitement for what’s to come. Packed with intriguing Easter eggs from the original series (2006–2013), the premiere delivers nostalgia in clever and unexpected ways.
This is just the beginning, as the first season promises plenty of callbacks and hidden gems, according to showrunner Clyde Phillips.
One of the biggest surprises in the premiere—aside from the revelation that Dexter Morgan is alive following the divisive Dexter: New Blood finale—is the return of the iconic Dexter Main Title theme by Rolfe Kent. In a nod to the original series, the creators opted to restore the classic version of the theme, abandoning the remixed version introduced at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. This decision mirrors how House of the Dragon retained the Game of Thrones theme, even as a prequel set 200 years earlier. With Dexter: Original Sin only taking place 15 years before the original series, keeping the same theme feels like the perfect choice to tie it all together.
Speaking of music, below is a list of every track (that we know the titles of) featured in Episode 101 of Dexter: Original Sin, titled “And in the Beginning…”. While Pat Irwin serves as the show’s composer, (and does an amazing job so far) his new compositions are not yet officially titled.
Unfortunately, we can’t begin the list with the Miami-vibe track that plays at Iron Lake Hospital when Dexter is stabilized by doctors. Although it’s a classic from the original series, Showtime and the late composer Daniel Licht never officially released it in any of Dexter’s soundtracks.
1. Dexter Main Title by Rolfe Kent (2006)
The iconic main theme of Dexter returns in its original form!
2. Happy Days Theme Song by Pratt & McClain (1976)
This nostalgic tune plays when Harry turns on the television at the first crime scene of the series. It’s the theme song from the beloved 1970s sitcom Happy Days.
3. Freedom! ’90 by George Michael (1990)
This track plays as Dexter visits the Miami Metro hiring kiosk in a scene filmed on location in Miami.
4. Ice Ice Baby by Vanilla Ice (1990)
This 90s hit is featured during a dramatic moment: Levi Reed is taking a shower while police raid his house, suspecting him of a major crime.
5. Put The Squeeze On ’Em by The Jaz (1990)
This song sets the scene as Deb and Dexter head to a frat party, underscoring the carefree yet tense atmosphere.
6. O.P.P. by Naughty by Nature (1991)
Dexter fights off a would-be assailant who was targeting Deb, and this energetic track intensifies the action.
7. Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver (1971)
Though this song doesn’t actually play in the episode, Nurse Mary sings it just before her chilling encounter with Dexter at her house.
8. Nothin’ But a Good Time by Poison (1988)
This lively rock anthem plays during a pivotal moment in the episode: Dexter killing Nurse Mary.
9. Hide Your Tears by Daniel Licht (2006)
A piece that gave fans goosebumps, this track from the original Dexter soundtrack immediately evoked nostalgia and brought viewers back to the series’ roots.
10. Blood Theme by Daniel Licht (2006)
A defining piece of music for the Dexter franchise, the Blood Theme once again plays during the end credits of Dexter: Original Sin. It’s now a signature feature, appearing in every iteration of the series.
