Earlier today, Showtime shared an exciting behind-the-scenes featurette, Autopsy Report, across its official Dexter social media accounts. In this featurette, Alex Shimizu takes the spotlight to introduce audiences to the younger version of Vince Masuka, one of Dexter’s most iconic colleagues.
Mastering the Masuka Laugh
“There’s a huge process with doing the laugh,” Shimizu reveals. “A lot of steps, a lot of warm-up, a lot of preparation beforehand. Once you feel right in the zone, you’re off and running. It’s all good.”
Masuka in the Early 1990s
So, what is Masuka like in this prequel era?
“Masuka is a wild card,” Shimizu says. “He’s very unpredictable on the show. At times, he can be kind of a frat boy—a big party animal. But at the same time, he’s very smart, determined, and passionate. He’s a good guy at heart. He likes to keep things light. This is a very serious show, so having Masuka around to lighten the mood—whether people want that or not—is great.”
The Dexter-Masuka Dynamic
Fans of the original series will notice a shift in the dynamic between Dexter and Masuka.
“It’s a very fun dynamic,” Shimizu explains. “In the first show, they’re buddies. But when we meet them in this one, Dexter is an intern, and Masuka is kind of his boss. There’s a little power pecking order. So, Masuka really talks down to him and gets to haze him. Anytime I get to boss Patty Gibson around, it’s a good day.”
