Michael C. Hall Talks about East Fifth Bliss

Via LATimes: Michael C. Hall was happy to trade in his titular role as a serial killer on "Dexter" for a schlubby underachiever in the new independent film "East Fifth Bliss." The film gets its world premiere tonight at the opening of the Newport Beach Film Festival.

"It was nice to play a character who is completely not spectacular," says the actor. "He is not uniquely capable or afflicted. It was a nice change of pace."

Allowing actors to stretch is at least partly what film festivals are about, and "East Fifth Bliss" is just one of many U.S. independent features being screened for the first time at Newport. Others include a zombie road comedy, "DeadHeads"; "Waking Madison," with Elisabeth Shue playing a suicidal sex phone operator; a comedic superensemble including Horatio Sanz and Ed Helms in "High Road"; and "Balls to the Wall," a new film by "Wayne's World" director Penelope Spheeris about a struggling cartoonist who finds more success as a male stripper.

"We really like to find some of the best films that haven't been screened yet or picked up by a major studio," says Gregg Schwenk, executive director and chief executive of the festival. "For a film like 'East Fifth Bliss,' exposure like this really can jump-start its opportunities for distribution."

In "Bliss," Hall plays 35-year-old Morris Bliss, who is stuck in a bad state of New York ennui. He has no job and no prospects and lives with his laconic widowed father, played by Peter Fonda. A surprising relationship with a precocious daughter of a former high school classmate shakes up his otherwise static life. Full article here.

POLL: Which was your Favorite Seventh Episode of a Season?

Sunday Poll: Which is your favorite 7th episode of a season? Vote below!

Season 1 Episode 7: Neil Perry, the supposed Ice Truck Killer, doesn't live up to his expectations. Meanwhile, Dexter has to deal with his past when a teenager he caught and released murders again. As a result, Dexter sets out to correct this mistake in one of the only ways he knows how. Rita's family life is torn asunder as her paroled ex-husband, Paul, reasserts himself as the father of her children. Paul even confronts Dexter, letting him know that he doesn't like Dexter being around his wife and kids. Rita wishes that Paul would go away forever, something that is definitely possible when your boyfriend happens to be Dexter.

Season 2 Episode 7: A written manifesto from the "Bay Harbor Butcher" sends the Special Task Force in charge of capturing the killer into chaos. All part of Dexter's plan as he tries to be more "pro-active" in keeping Agent Lundy off his tail. But things start to spiral downward for Dexter as Lila's influence begins to take its toll on Dexter's personal life.

Season 3 Episode 7: Miguel offers Dexter a new potential victim, but after properly vetting her, Dexter isn't sure she fits the Code. When he informs Miguel of this, he reacts with anger, making Dexter believe the new friendship is in danger. An old sickly friend of Dexter's, Camilla, reinforces this idea, when she asks Dexter to help end her life, insisting she would never ask a friend to do something against his conscience. Meanwhile, Rita finds out that Sylvia is beginning to suspect her husband, Miguel, is having an affair. Debra ends up revealing to Anton that he is being used as bait to lure the Skinner, forcing her to find new way to find the Skinner. As a result, Anton realizes Debra cares for him more than he thought.

Season 4 Episode 7: Dexter finally managed to strike a balance between work, family... and other pursuits. But he's keenly aware that times like these aren't meant to last. When Miami Metro discovers a string of murders connected to a prominent photographer, Dexter sees an opportunity for a clean kill. However, his plans seem to be thwarted every step of the way. Even Harry disapproves of Dexter's choice of pastime, urging him instead to focus his efforts on the Trinity Killer. Meanwhile, Debra returns to work, frustrated to find everyone treating her with kid gloves. She decides to concentrate on her pursuit of the Trinity Killer as well as delving into her father's checkered past — investigations which Dexter fears might lead her to danger — or worse, the truth.

Season 5 Episode 7: While helping Lumen, Dexter finds himself on a collision course with Debra and the rest of Homicide when he is called to investigate a horrifying crime scene. Meanwhile, the Santa Muerte case leads to a violent standoff between Debra and the Santa Muerte killers.

Former 'Dexter' Showrunner Chip Johannessen Joins Showtime's 'Homeland'

Via THR: Chip reunites with "24's" Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa on the CIA drama with Claire Danes. Johannessen has sealed a deal to join Showtime’s Homeland as a writer-producer.
Johannessen, who was the showrunner on the net’s top-rated Dexter last season, will join Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa’s CIA thriller, according to sources.

Showtime has ordered 12 episodes of Homeland, which stars Damian Lewis, Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin.

Loosely based on the Israeli television series Prisoners of War, Danes plays a CIA agent investigating the circumstances involving the rescue of a U.S. soldier (Lewis) missing in Iraq and presumed dead. Patinkin co-stars as a veteran CIA Division Chief and her superior officer. The two begin to suspect the soldiers’ reappearance is part of an Al Qaeda plot and that he may be colluding to perpetrate an attack on U.S. soil.

In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Showtime entertainment president David Nevins described Homeland as “a psychological thriller with a real ticking clock and real edge-of-your seat elements.”

Gordon, Gansa and Johannessen worked together on Fox’s 24; Johannessen joined the show in 2009 as a producer, rising to co-executive producer in 2010.

Michael C. Hall talks about East Fifth Bliss, his health & Dexter

Via OCWeekly: Michael C. Hall's growth and range as an actor can be tracked by three much-lauded roles: as the flamboyant emcee in director Sam Mendes' Broadway revival of Cabaret in 1999; as repressed gay mortician David Fisher on all five seasons of HBO's Six Feet Under (Mendes famously recommended Hall to series creator Alan Ball); and, of course, as the title character in Showtime's Dexter, which is about a serial killer with a heart—literally!

It's a busy time for the 40-year-old. Peep World, a comedy he co-starred in with Sarah Silverman and Rainn Wilson, opened last month. Hall heads the cast of the dramedy East Fifth Bliss, which opens the Newport Beach Film Festival on April 28. And in late May, he returns to the Dexter sets for a sixth season, which will air in late September. Producers, of whom Hall is one, have said there will be a seventh season.

On top of everything else, there was Hall's bout with Hodgkin's lymphoma early last year, something Jennifer Carpenter, his real-life wife and Dexter-life sister, announced in April 2010 was in remission. She filed for divorce in December. No wonder he sounded tired during a morning phone call from his home in Los Angeles. Or maybe it was too early to slip out of his slow North Carolina drawl.

OC Weekly: Can you describe East Fifth Bliss?
Michael C. Hall: It's a . . . I think the tagline for the movie explains it best. They call it a coming-of-age story for someone who should have come of age a long time ago. Morris Bliss, the character I play, has been spinning his wheels for some time. He's still living in the apartment he grew up in with his father. You learn pretty early on that Morris' mother died while he was a teenager. He never really moved past that; part of him is frozen inside. Then certain things conspire, and he is propositioned by a very young girl. Simultaneously things become crazy that force him to start moving forward. Read more after the jump...

Latest from Ausiello - Scott Buck and Season 6

Tell as something about Dexter Season 6. Is there any news? - Johndextergr
Ausiello: The show isn’t going to self-destruct under new boss Scott Buck, who took the showrunning reins from Chip Johannessen. “Scott had been with [Dexter] since the very first season as a writer, so I wouldn’t consider it a change in direction,” maintains Showtime president David Nevins of the behind-the-scenes shakeup. “Chip came in for one season — I love Chip, and he may well be working with us again soon — but Scott, and actually the staff around Scott, has been [around since] Season 1. There’s a lot of continuity to the old days of that show.”

One of the best scenes ever of Dexter from Episode 11 of Season 2.

"Dexter"-Like Serial Killer Taking Lives in Long Island

Via: gather.com: A real-life "Dexter" may be murdering prostitutes in Long Island, New York. Thus far, eight bodies have been uncovered by police, and authorities are suspecting the serial killer may have ties to law enforcement, akin to Showtime's hit show.

The show follows the title character (played by Michael C. Hall), a blood-splatter analyst working for the Florida Police Department. The product of a heinous tragedy involving his mother’s death when he was a child, Dexter has learned to only take his blood lust out on those who “deserve” it – a.k.a. murderers of the innocent.

In recent months investigators in Suffolk County, NY discovered human remains of eight persons, half of which have been identified as prostitutes. Authorities have hypothesized that the killer could have ties to law enforcement, maybe even a cop, due to a seeming understanding of police investigative techniques – such as making calls to victims’ families from highly populated areas. Dexter Creator James Manos Jr. to Direct Michael C. Hall and Vera Farmiga In "Love, Scotch And Death"

Via deadline.com: "Dexter creator James Manos Jr and Michael C. Hall will collaborate on the big screen after Hall wraps the sixth season as the strangely likable serial killer title character. They will team on the independent feature Love, Scotch and Death, with Hall playing a character based on Manos, during a most stressful week filled with unimaginable mishaps. Vera Farmiga will star with Hall. Manos will make his feature directing debut, with shooting to begin in November.

When Manos first wrote the script, he called it The Slow And Complete Decompensation of Jim Manos. It covers a rather bizarre week in the man’s life. After returning from a stressful vacation, he discovers his parents have died of natural causes together in bed, which forces him to navigate his way past an unsympathetic funeral director, his bewildered children and manic wife, an eccentric priest and some over-sexed neighbors. There is also an arrest for assault and the death of his wife’s beloved dog.

Manos is an Emmy winner for his writing work on The Sopranos and was also a writer and consulting producer on The Shield before creating Dexter for Showtime. Hollywood Studios International is handling worldwide sales, with HSI’s Dave Brown will produce along with Paul Schiff. Manos’ head of production, Michelle Trump, will also be a producer. Authentic’s Jon Rubinstein will be exec producer with HSI’s Steven Saxton and Eric Christenson.

HSI will finance the film and sell territories at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. HSI is getting more active in generating its own projects, and it has made a first-look deal with Schiff, producer of Rushmore and Solitary Man."

Michael C. Hall talks Peep World and Dexter Season Six

Thanks to Liz for the heads up. Michael C. Hall has an indie movie opening this weekend. Peep World is about a family dealing with one sibling authoring a thinly veiled tell-all book about their problems. Hall plays a frustrated husband who goes to peep booths in the middle of the day. He’s getting ready to shoot season six of “Dexter,” so we got to talk a little about that too.

Q: Since “Dexter,” have you been getting more leading man movie offers or more of these quirky, comedy or otherwise different sorts of roles?

Michael C. Hall: I don’t know. I certainly get my share of things that I pass on because they involve me being in one way or another in the same room with a dead body, but I don’t know. I’d say when I was doing “Six Feet Under,” everybody associated me with that character and “Dexter” started. That character was my first victim and now everybody associates me with Dexter but maybe the spectrum that exists between those two characters is something that people consider when they think of me for things. I don’t know, I think I’ve been attracted to maybe stuff like this where a person is not uniquely internally afflicted. They’re just more of a relative everyman dealing with external chaos. Season 4 Episode 4: Dexter is left home alone and with free time as Rita takes the kids on a vacation which may prove interesting for Dexter in several ways. BREAKING: Jennifer Carpenter Leaves Dexter

UPDATE: Happy April Fools' Day Dexperts!

According to EW, Dexter star Jennifer Carpenter (Debra) no longer belongs to the cast of Dexter, since she seems to have had a fight with her co-star and ex-husband Michael C. Hall, regarding their common scenes next season. Carpenter had at first agreed at less scenes with Hall, but it's clear now that she demands changes to the main Season 6 story. Her agent confirmed today her leaving from the series, since she's looking for other projects. These are shocking news to Dexter fans around the world, because her absence from the series massively influences the plot. Plans are currently being made in Showtime for her replacement.
