Yvonne Strahovski Dishes on Her Beauty Routine

via the New York Times: Known for her roles on “Dexter” and “Chuck,” Yvonne Strahovski, 31, plays a scientist in the film “I, Frankenstein,” opening next year. Raised in Sydney, Australia, she lives in Los Angeles and maintains her blond good looks with a beauty routine that emphasizes natural products, notwithstanding highlights and the occasional spritz of Chanel. She explains here.

SKIN CARE
My morning routine is pretty basic and simple. I try to use natural products. I’m superconscious of not putting chemicals on my skin, like parabens and sulfates. I love MyChelle products. It’s this organic line that a friend, who is a makeup artist and facialist, introduced me to. I use the fruit and enzyme cleanser and then I moisturize with the pumpkin cream. They also have a couple of serums that I sort of go between, like this morning, I put on the G2 one, which is a firming serum.

I use a foundation by Koh Gen Do. I put it on with my hands. I think it spreads a more even layer. I’ll also do mascara, but I’m always changing up which brand. I’m still trying to find a really great natural one. I’ve used the Josie Maran one before, which is O.K. But one of my favorites is the pomegranate tinted lip balm by Burt’s Bees. I have them everywhere: one at home, one in my pocket, one in my purse. That’s pretty much it and then I’m out the door. Read more after the jump!

At night, I’ll follow the same routine as in the morning. I don’t use makeup remover, but just the same MyChelle cleanser. But I will use an exfoliator — they have a great one with enzymes — after a day of working in heavy makeup. Also, I’m very much into oils. Sometimes, I’ll put on this great 100 percent pure vitamin E oil. If my skin is irritated or it’s been a long work day, I like to put on a little lavender oil or maybe eucalyptus, which is really good for healing. And there’s this great Australian product called Papaw. It comes in a red tube and it’s a fermented fruit product that most people probably use as a lip balm, but I put it around my eyes and let it soak in overnight. It’s very moisturizing and you wouldn’t want to put it all over because it’d be too oily.

FRAGRANCE
I’m big on scents. I go between Cristalle by Chanel and the Dolce & Gabbana 18 La Lune. I’ll spritz some on every day. Of course, I love my oils. I often buy them when I travel. The latest batch, though, I bought at Whole Foods. There’s the lavender, but I also have grapefruit and rosemary, which is my favorite.

HAIR
My hair is fairly light already so it’s not a whole project when I go to the salon. I just get highlights. A hairstylist that I worked with on “Chuck” suggested Nancy Braun, who has the Balayage salon, and I’ve been going to her ever since. It was through Nancy that I found this lovely girl at the salon named Sacha, who now cuts my hair. At home, I use the Giovanni line. The deeper moisture conditioner is amazing. Otherwise, I have naturally wavy hair and I don’t use any styling products. Once in a while, I’ll do the Klorane dry shampoo for a little bit of texture.

RED CARPET
I don’t go out and do facials or any of the beauty services. I’m the one who’ll order the burger and fries before an event. In general, I would say I’m probably a little more conscious of looking after my skin since I moved to L.A. Working on camera, your face is your career. But I’m not really one to buy into the pressures. At the end of the day, the job I do, it’s more about the art and craft of it. If you’re good at what you do, there’s a place for you in the industry, no matter what you or your skin look like. When it comes to makeup, I have picked up a tip on how makeup artists will highlight the edges of my face: they’ll use bronzer on my cheeks but also my nose and chin. A little bit on the chin gives you a glow-y look. Same with blush. I’m a huge fan of keeping the look glow-y and natural. I like neutral tones and shimmery things as opposed to more defined looks. Sometimes, if the occasion or outfit calls for it, I’ll go there. In that case, a nice lip color works. I’m also more adventurous with nail color, deep reds and purples and things like that. Sadly, my manicures and pedicures only last a day because I’m so active. I’m always running around.

FITNESS
I’m a big believer in exercise. I’m a bigger believer in eating right, which is simply with plenty of fruits and vegetables. I’m not a gym girl, though. I’ve never had a gym membership. I’d rather go hiking or surfing, which is a very new thing for me. It’s only been about two months, but I’m in love with it.
