Showtime President David Nevins: Seasons 7 And 8 Of ‘Dexter’ Will Be “Likely” Show’s Last

Via deadline.com: Minutes after Showtime announced a new two-year deal with Dexter star Michael C. Hall and a two-year pickup for the show, deadline.com spoke with Showtime entertainment president David Nevins about the deal and the future of Dexter, the network’s highest-rated series. Last month, deadline reported about a breakdown in the negotiations between Hall and Showtime over a $4 million gap between the $24 million Hall’s reps were reportedly seeking and the $20 million Showtime was offering for a new 2-year contract. (Hall’s existing one is up at the end of the current Season 6.) Today, Nevins declined to discuss financials but stressed that they didn’t drive the deal-making. “It’s been a pretty simple negotiation, and Michael C. Hall has been incredibly gentlemanly throughout the whole process,” Nevins said. “The biggest question was: what is the trajectory of the show creatively? And after speaking with (executive producers) John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton and Scott Buck, it became pretty clear that there was a very clear 3-year trajectory. Once we established that, this became a very simple negotiation, which went down pretty quickly.” The 3-year trajectory includes the current sixth season and the upcoming Seasons 7 and 8. Does it mean that Dexter will end after eight seasons? “I’m not going to say with absolute certainty that this is the end, but that is the likely scenario, that the series is moving towards a definite end,” Nevins said.

Also key in the negotiation was working out the show’s filming schedule to accommodate Hall and Showtime. Given the success the pairing of Dexter and rookie Homeland has had, the network is looking to keep the 2 series on compatible schedules so they can continue to air together, which has been accomplished. “The pairing of Dexter and Homeland has made for a vety powerful Sunday, and our plan is to likely keep them together,” Nevins said. “Clearly those shows cement our schedule on Sunday for the next several years.” Both Dexter and Homeland have been growing in the ratings for the past five consecutive weeks. “It’s remarkable how Dexter continues to be on a steady upward trajectory in its sixth season,” Nevins said.

  1. I think ending the show on season 8 is the way to go. Also, I think that it's wise of Showtime to keep DEXTER and Homeland together in the broadcasting schedule. They pair up very well with each other. That is just great news to hear, that a deal was reached. It would have been a shame if the show would have abruptly ended like that. I don't care how much money actors are making on a show; frankly, I don't think it's any of our business. That was another wise decision to not talk about salary, either. It seems Showtime really knows how to do things with class.

  2. I thInk the show needs a creative boost. Season 6 is not delivering the epic standards we are acostumed to receive. Hope it gets better and we get to see great S7 and S8.

  3. Season 6 not delivering??? Are you watching the same show as the rest of us???? Because season 6 has been FUCKING AWESOME. I mean just the last 2 episodes alone have made this the best season yet, and I think the whole season has been incredible. MCH is at his absolute finest, and the rest of the cast has been stellar as well. But if Dexter isnt living up to your pathetic standards ....then please go somewhere else ...NO ONE wants to hear complaints ...go back to watching Glee or some other mediocre shit and leave the REAL SHIT to us true Dexperts. Hail Darkly Dreaming Dearly Devoted Deeply Disturbed Demented Daddy Dexter.

  5. I guess it's all a matter of preference, but in my opinion this season has been the most boring one yet. Can't say I was very impressed with Brian's appearance, but I'm no Dexpert like JesseJames.

PS: Since when has "..." been a substitute for regular punctuation marks?

  6. JessieJames is a fraud pay no mind. This season sucks. Last season sucked too.

  7. Well, I have to say that, so far, I think season 6's ok, but we've seen better things on Dexter. Anyway, the season still fills the show's quality standars to me. I'm happy to hear about this. Come on, not all shows last for this long, and if Dexters ends in season 8 with a proper ending, I'll be really happy with that.

  10. Parts of Season 6 are still darn good, the best bits are all Deb and Dexter, Masuka and his interns, and Brother Sam though. The DDK killer is "bleh" almost as boring as the killer in the last novel. I just want to see Maria and Quinn gone, done with them completely. They need to strip this down to just Deb, Dex, Vince, and Angel and side characters, and the occasional Matthews cameo. Deb needs to find out and get her hands dirty. One of the good suspense points of the later books is the fact that if Dex goes down, Deb goes with him. Which puts her in awkward positions like having to ask Dex to plant evidence to frame a police officer who tried to destroy her career. Stuff like that would make for way better material than Book of Revelation nonsense. This religious cult stuff is off, just like the 3rd novel, boring and silly. Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter just own their roles... we need more of them working together like we had in Season 1 (still the best season by far)

I don't care what any of you haters say. THis season has been awesome. And the majority of true Dexperts agree in full, as the ratings have shown. So if you have nothing but complaints and lame comments then please feel free to piss off and go watch Glee or some other stupid regular television crap.
