    1. Oh yeah, she found his blood slides!!

    2. She finds ONE blood slide, the one that doesn't burn that Dexter took from Hanks. That gets her thinking about the BHB because she never thought it was Doakes and wants to exonerate him of the crime.

And Below, Mr. MF, I never thought they would have Dexter on the run for 12 episodes, they can barely keep you interested and handle the writing of getting him from one close call in one episode to the next much less 12 on the run... you are thinking, please think some more about that, I want to hear what else you can think of.

    3. Dexter has been the villain since the show began! What are you thinking? Last year was when he was supposed to be more human and they blew it, that's how we got here! I think the human idea might be over. The interest in the new girl could be that she was a former killer herself, as we have been told, and she has somehow stopped, forgiven herself, moved on enough to be intriguing to Dexter, so maybe that will be the human angle this year.

  3. Considering that it refers to Deb trying to cover up 'their' involvement rather than 'his' involvement, perhaps they'll both end up going on the run.

This season is likely to see the increasing corruption of Deb as she tries to protect Dexter. It started at the end of S5 when she protected him without knowing, because deep down she agrees with his form of justice. This season will mark Deb's transformation from the S1 idealist to the same moral ambiguity that has always characterised Dexter.

    It's gonna be good.

    1. I agree with this, except I hope the show doesnt end with them on the run. I'd rather the show have a definitive ending, such as Dex & Deb going to jail, Dying or Dex's Dark Passenger leaving him and him losing the urge to kill. If they leave the ending hanging with them on the run there gonna leave the option open for spinoff movies like they did with the X Files and I dont think that would be an appropriate way for the show to carry one

    3. I think you're right. I think the revelation that Harry taught Dexter a code to deal with his serial killing in a way that he could still have a life will not only shock Deb but will also bring her around to a more accepting attitude with Dexter. But I could be totally off base. They have talked about some scenes with Dex and Deb as kids, so I personally think we will see some scenes where either Dex does some things that bothers Deb and when remembering it after seeing what she saw Dexter do, then it'll start to come together for her. Or maybe she over hears Dexter and Harry talking about some things involving the code, and while it may not have made sense to her as a child, seeing Dexter ritualistically murder someone may connect some old dots for her. This is ALL nothing more than speculation but I am so totally stoked to see what happens next. This season is going to be the best yet I think. I can't friggin' wait.

My understanding of the s5 finale was not that Deb agreed with 'his kind of justice' but rather that she showed compassion for the girl (Lumen) who had been through so much. Deb was clearly traumatised by watching the rape and torture videos of Lumen, she understood that all Lumen was trying to do was to survive.

"I watched those videos over and over... Maybe some people do deserve to die. BUT I'm a cop. I don't get to make that choice.". (to paraphrase) That is Deb's code. Leave it to the justice courts. Or at least, that was her code at that point in time.

But Deb compromised. She let Lumen go because the girl had been through enough already, but not because she agreed with the killing of Jordan Chase. She let Dexter go because she believed that he thought Lumen had been through so much already as well. The irony, for me, is that I'm not sure Dexter really did feel compassion for Lumen. She roped him in to her kills. And then he relished the opportunity to target her torturers. I don't think he killed them for her. He did it for himself. He did it because it made him feel better about what happened to Rita.

That's how I saw it anyway!

    5. 1:08, 7:40, & 5:23

I agree and enjoyed all those posts, especially 5:23 - I think you hit it right on the nose.

“You can’t do one thing to make up for another, that’s what Jordan Chase said. But he’s wrong, we do that all the time. That is the way the world works, we try to make things right, even me.".... Dexter (end of S5)

      1:36

I am going to have to disagree with you. I don't want a definitive end. I want to be able to revisit Dex & Deb in my darkest dreams and wonder where they are and what they are doing.

I think the show has always been morally ambiguous. It lives, like Dexter, somewhere between the darkness and the light. The ending should likewise be ambiguous. No closure no easy answers, no definitive end. I kind of like the idea of Deb and Dex being doomed to the twilight, always looking over their shoulders - stuck with each other, kind of in their own private purgatory... having to live with Dexter's Dark Passenger, knowing that anytime it could all come to a close.

I also think that it's good business. This is a cult hit show that has seen an exponential increase in it's fanbase and will continue to attract more and more interest through the years as people work up their nerve to watch it. To leave the door open for a feature film a few years down the road would be a good call.

If the DVD sales both domestic and foreign continue to climb on the arc they have been, it would be an extremely attractive option to knock out a film with a decent budget and a declining A list actor to play the big bad that Dex and Deb are hunting.

Who wouldn't want to see Michael C. Hall as an aging Dexter hunting down a psycho killer played by Russell Crowe, Ben Kingsley, Tommy Lee Jones, Jeff Bridges, Gary Oldman, Mickey Rourke, or someone of the like? You saw what a solid actor like Lithgow can do with a good villain, just imagine one of those actors pulling it off. Especially Kingsley - I know that dude has a scarier-than-shit performance just waiting to be unleashed and Dexter is the perfect vehicle for someone like that.

I do not want to see a S9, but I do want to leave it open just in case someone comes up with an inspired movie script. :)

    6. But her argument with Dexter, though it sounds dumb to me, it is being spoken in that trailer, he says I have to be me and she says yes, but to be you is a felony, I have Ltnt. in front of my name and I can't ignore that. I think Deb would let it go if he showed signs of remorse or changing and that she didn't clue into the other murders, but she does and he doesn't stop which forces her to go the other way, that is the whole point of tension on the show, where these two join and what keeps them apart, two sides of a coin cannot become one and right always wins over wrong. Two wrongs don't make a good ending. She has to be torn, not with it or in on it with him, she has to have the other side of the coin represented, she is the rule follower, she can't abide the killing, she won't follow her brother down the path, it wasn't in her pathology, like Brian, from the beginning. She was lost in love from neglect, she was not lost in the question of right and wrong. If he is on the run and she does take him down and gets to his side and he is alive, he will forgive her for putting him (them) out of his misery and ending it.

Dex being arrested or on the run is just not what this show is about.

    1. Hate to break it to you. It's set up to end badly or negatively.

It's always been partly about the potential of being arrested if he's ever caught though. I think on the run with Deb since now she'll be implicated or death to save her career/life is more likely.

  10. because human life is precious, because one can never totally condemn a fellow human a take life away from him/her and take all hope from him/her that their life can change for the better... most will probably not change for the better, so ok, prevent them from commiting the horrible things again, separate them from the rest, try to help them to get over the hatred, agressivity, greed, fear they might feel that drive them to hurt others, try to help them as much as it is possible and though it might not work, and though our prisons hardly help anyone anyway, still, as long as a person lives, there is still hope things will get better... and dexter is great, why hate him or wish him dead or in jail? (I don§t think he deserves that), but in my opinion not because he "cleans the streets"...

      great post,,,even i think in other thing,,but i love how u said !!

    2. But they did "deserve" to die, most of them anyway. So with that logic Dexter deserves to die too. Which he does in a way, he's no better than the killers he's hunting down and cutting to pieces. Dexter knows this and so do most viewers.

With his code he may be a tinsy tiny bit better but in the end he's the same. Don't act like he's not.

Also, I don't know what Anon 3:49 is suggesting but I don't think Dexter would do very well in therapy.

I don't understand why there is such a delay since shows like NCIS (?!) are shown in the uk 1 week after it airs in the US do it's disappointing for uk fans to have to wait 6 months before seeing Dexter. Must be a budget thing as it'a the same channel (FXUK) that shows both NCIS and Dexter...

  15. @4.46

All your posts are laced with extreme melodrama.

We know you are fond of the character of Dexter, but surely it is about telling the best story possible; and if that story were to end with, for instance, Dexter making a noble sacrifice to save Deb and Harrison, with him somehow redeeming himself in death, proving that he is not a monster, then surely that would be better than him not having to answer for his crimes and 'getting away with it'?

Why the mere suggestion that Dexter might die at the end of S8 would cause you to delete your tumblr account, I have no idea.

    5. MCH has said that Dexter should not get away with his crimes, that he is a likable character but what he does is wrong. He has also said he never wanted his character to end up in jail. So, the ending is so obvious I don't know how they are going to manage to wring a mystery out of it. They are already complaining about having two season to do it, the producers wishing it ended this year. Why is it so obvious? Because the story has always had these two people divided being on the right or wrong side of the law and morality. Justice taken into the hands of a serial killer, that we have come to like because he is smart and funny, is still a crime and Deb will never be able to accept it. The arguments you hear them having in the trailers are the set up to the end. He says But I have to be me and she says but to be you is to commit a felony crime and I am a cop who catches criminals. And he doesn't stop killing. The ending is right in front of us, the only people who aren't laughing are the poor writers who got stuck with something so obvious and having the job of dragging it out over 2 seasons and make it seem like a guessing game when there is nothing to guess about. Remember the Sopranos? A lot of people called that ending ambiguous, many who really watched that show and knew those characters knew that Tony Soprano got killed and it went black. I can describe the whole ending but won't but the signs are all there. Because they don't show it to you, it seems ambiguous.

They are bringing on another character who supposedly figures out Dexter's secret to. He is a mystery crime writer. I had the idea that like a story within a story, Dexter will be killed, and it will be Quinn, Debra, somehow taking a little heat off Deb, he will forgive her for putting him out of his misery before he dies. And then I perhaps see the camera pan back to the front window of a bookstore with a new best seller, about a serial killer who kills serial killers and works as a blood spatter analyst, and by another nerdy name, Dexter will live on just as he does now, in books. I like it. The best of both worlds. And Deb becomes a whole person, right now you have two broken people, it is Deb who gets rid of her darkness so that she can go on and live a life that isn't haunted by the darkness that Dexter brings to it. One of them will survive, and as MCH has said, it shouldn't be Dexter getting away with murder. Of course he is the reason we watch the show. But it is a show. When you end a show, you have to bring in reality a bit more, right? They can't fly off in a bubble to what, live on with their craziness? One is not crazy without the other, the craziness must go. The End. And by a book! Forget a movie, this has already been done and done. It would flop as fast as Fox and Mulder!

    1. i hope he dont die and still kill more and more

    2. You know, just because Dexter kills bad people doesn't mean he has to die in a similar manner. That's just satiating a need for karmic justice via television.

Everyone is going to die - me, you, and fictional characters too. It's not the death that's interesting it's the life that leads up to that point. Dexter dying as a old man yet living the life of a secretive serial killer with a sister that protects him is far more interesting that "boom, he dies" in a hollywood fashion ending. That's a boring and cheap way to end a great series and character.

      Delete
  17. Dexter and Deb need to come to terms with their relationship as it stands and how far it will go. Deb now knows what he's been concealing and pretty much the entire series subconsciously revolves around her not knowing, around Dexter's secret life. Now it's out in the open. I think the ending will reflect a closure and not "Dex is going to jail" or "one of them dying" rather it will be the closure to the secrecy, sort of like in the books. He can help her uphold her sense of justice and she can utilize his talents for the greater good. Deb has a strong sense of justice in any form, showed by her letting go of Lumen and Dex without knowing it was them. She saw justice in what they were doing. Deb is going to have to accept the fact her brother has to kill and he kills bad guys. It will take her two seasons to come to terms with it. Conversely, Dex will have to come to terms with the fact that she knows and that he doesn't have to hide or lie anymore, which is going to be very hard.

The writers are probably going to see that killing or jailing one of them is really a cheesy way of ending things, everyone expects that. But reconciliation and transformation of both characters is a nice way to tie things up. I would hate to see the ending come on a cheesy hollywood note. Ending the show is not necessarily ending the series. Look at House (SPOILERS), it's open ended but we saw a transformation of the character. He gave up everything for his dying best friend, becoming selfless rather than the selfish misanthrope known throughout the series. Deb and Dex have to transform.

    ReplyDelete
  18. **ending the show doesn't nescessarily end the series** what I meant to say was that ending the show doesn't have to end the character's lives as we know it, it just leaves the story in way that the characters keep on living just there's no more story/conflict to tell.
