Lauren Velez Spills Season 7 Secrets: "LaGuerta Re-Opens the [Spoiler] Case"

Via: huffingtonpost.com: Puerto Rican actress Lauren Velez is busy filming the hit Showtime drama "Dexter," which returns for a seventh season on September 30th. The Puerto Rican scene-stealer— who plays everyone's favorite Police Captain Maria Laguerta on the hit show—took a break from her busy shooting schedule to chat exclusively with The Huffington Post about the highly anticipated new season. This article contains spoilers! Read at your own risk, after the jump below...

What can you tease about "Dexter" season 7?
How's this? We've always known that Laguerta is great at manipulating circumstances and making strategic political moves for her career, but now we will actually find out what a good detective she is—what a good cop she is. She uncovers something this season that could potentially unravel everything.

In an interview with TVGuide.com, "Dexter" executive producer Sara Colleton said Laguerta finds Dexter's blood slide (a slide she had only seen in the case of the Bay Harbor Butcher case). What can you tell us about that?
Laguerta re-opens her own investigation into the Bay Harbor Butcher case...

That's a great story line!
It's a really good story line. And even though we're only on episode four now, the scenes are really powerful...really powerful stuff. I mean, she finds the slide and then she orders the evidence back...

Again, really great stuff!
It's a really meaty story line and it makes me really happy!

Laguerta has been Dexter's biggest cheerleader for a long time. Do you think her view of him will change in season 7?
It's too hard to tell. I don't know how it's going to impact her relationship with Dexter, because so far she's had very little interaction with him.

Since Laguerta is re-opening the Bay Harbor Butcher case, we have to ask: should she be worried about her safety?
I have no idea. But I would think potentially, yes. This is "Dexter."

If Laguerta did find out the truth about Dexter, do you think she'd turn him in?
You know, that's a hypothetical. I always think back to season two to all of the stuff with Doakes and how everyone made Laguerta feel like she was crazy. And now to find evidence that essentially exonerates Doakes...I think this is an opportunity for Laguerta to clear his name and in a way, clear her name. He was her partner and he was the most important person in her life. I think more than anything she really, really wants to clear his name.

Last season, it was revealed that Deb loves her brother. Do you think she'll tell Laguerta about her feelings for Dexter?
I'm sure that's private.

Dexter's producers have confirmed that "Dexter" will end at the end of season eight...
Are you asking if I'll be here at the end of season eight? No se. I hope so!

    At least they have humor.

    1. I don't get what everyone's problem is with her.

She's always been good to Dexter. Who cares how she treats Debra?

  2. Haters can hate all they want. You can't deny she's a great actress and LaGuerta is a real bitch, but like she said in season 6 "she does everything in the interest of Miami Metro." She is just doing her job. I don't hate her character, but she's also not my favorite.

  3. She may be a bitch but she's a pragmatic bitch

  4. Maria Laguerta can be annoying at times but she makes a great adversary. And she's an interesting character in her own right. She knows how to play the political game, manipulate people, IS a good cop and when the writers gives her the right stuff the character really shines. Just go back and rewatch her scenes frome the previous seasons like her interaction with the immigrant boy in season 1, her conversations with Doakes and Lundy in season 2 and her confrontations with Debra in season 3, 4 and 5.

Season 6 was the only one I felt where the writers put her on the side (her and the others from the core cast) to give more space to the guest stars. She was barely there and her character sort of faded out and became a bit too one-dimensional.

I really really would love to see the core cast being more present for the next 2 seasons. Instead of always bringing more and more guest stars (not that interesting on the whole, like Louis, Anderson or brother Sam) focusing on the relationships between the main characters could be potentially more compelling.

I know the show is called Dexter and it is mainly the story of Dexter and Debra but I've always felt Debra's relationship with LaGuerta and Batista was interesting as was Dexter relationship with Masuka and Batista (remember Dexter line to Batista about how "if I have to choose anyone to be like it would be you"...).

I just feel like we really don't see Dexter and Debra interact much with the others from Miami Metro anymore. I know that with only 12 episodes per season it's not easy for the writers and they have to put the focus on Dexter and Debra (especially in season 7) but it is not mutually exclusive...

Anyway, seems like this season we'll get a bit of that, at least with LaGuerta, so YAY ;)

Man I wrote a roman again.

  5. I guess we can all agree that Lauren Vélez is a great actress and that Maria LaGuerta is one of the more interesting characters.

But that doesn't mean that you have to like her (I certainly don't).

It's like Trinity: Yes, he was the only bad guy who could keep up with Dexter, but for me he will always be that a**hole who killed Rita.

  6. I always knew a quiet investigation by LaGuerta of BHB was a possibility, so I'm glad that they are going to finally do it. I, too, want Doakes' named cleared before the end of the series. Like Dexter said, Doakes was a great Detective and a worthy adversary, and didn't deserve what happened to him. Masuka won't be pleased, because his movie script would have to be scrapped. "He'd rather burn than get burned..."

    1. It was only Debra, Batista and Lundy that figured out that BHB was one of their own at MMPD, correct? I'm not sure if LaGuerta knows that they proved it had to be someone within the department. Lundy seemed to make it crystal clear that it was to remain between the three of them. That would mean LaGuerta wouldn't necessarily be focused on anyone within the department just yet.

    2. When they told LaGuerta that James is the BHB, she might have asked them why they think so (at that time, the knives with James' fingerprints hadn't been found yet). So maybe Lundy told LaGuerta and Mathews the whole story.

    3. Yeah, it's more than possible that Laguerta would know by now that Lundy was looking at people within the department. The trick would be to frame Lila, since she was the one who killed Doakes. I don't think even Dexter could pull that off, though. He needs a fall guy...Louis, perhaps?

I do like the idea that some other fan suggested -- that LaGuerta may learn the truth about Dexter this year and Louis kills her for it to protect his idol. The thing about this storyline is that it should be great, no matter how they decide to do it. Should be a fun season.

    4. Are we watching the same show? The FBI got involved when it became a serial killer, but La Guerta was furious, she wanted to present her evidence that he had been out of the country and they wouldn't let her! Case closed is the answer the FBI wanted and that was that. Now she gets her chance. My worry is will she be in danger is she gets too close to the truth...

  8. Apart from Batista and Masuka, everyone else has taken turns to be annoying. Laguerta has been unfair to Deb, Deb has been unfair to Dex in the past (specially seasons 1 & 2), Quinn has been annoying for 2 out of 4 seasons and so on.
But, apart from Quinn, I wouldn't want anyone to go. And even Quinn is okay if they find a relevant plot line for him. I hope they don't have him turn adversary again. It's been done to death.

  9. I would LOVE to see a cameo from Erik King in season seven. I am hoping Laguerta has some flashback that has Doakes verbally attacking Dexter somehow I mean why not? They brought back the Ice Truck Killer for season six so it would be pretty nostalgic if they asked Eric King to come back for a few episodes as Doakes.

    2. Yes! I would love that. Hell, even give Dexter a creepy vision of Doakes in his lab, all burnt up, "Didn't think you could get rid of me that easily, did you, Morgan? I'm still inside that sick head of yours." That would be spooky.
