It's been almost 3 years since Rita died and 2 years since Lumen left. Do you think that our favorite serial killer needs a new love interest in the forhcoming season of the show? Vote now!

  1. In my opinion:

Dexter's problems are so deep and complex, a new romantic love interest at this point is so not going to help him. Another Rita? Who didn't even know who Dexter is? Another Lumen? Equally fucked up?

No. My view is that only Deb and her familial relationship, bond and shared history can help and understand Dexter. Not necessarily in the context of romance though.

What do you MEAN by 'love interest'?

Mind you, any opportunity for MCH to get his kit off... ;)

    1. I couldn't agree more with you... but i wouldn't say "fucked up" thing, I'll say instead "style of living" xD

    2. Is Dexter even capable of 'love'? He craves connection but I'm not sure he has ever really truly 'loved' anyone or anything other than his compulsion to kill. That compulsion, at the moment, is his one and only love.

      So the question is questionable.

If you know what I mean.

  2. I vote no. I cant stand another bland passive female trying to act next to the Brilliance that is MCH as Dexter... I don't like "in love" dexter.. I like F**k Buddy Dexter.. Either way i don't think they have room in what appears to be a packed plotline/script this season

    1. So do I. She was someone he actually seemed to truly care about and connect with. And she didn't leave too harshly. I can see her coming back because she couldn't lead a normal domestic life even though she has tried. They were so good together

  4. In every season (except for the 6th one) Dexter had either a girlfriend or a wife. It's a part of the show. After all, the "Dexter" is about a seriel killer trying to connect to human beings.

Fuck, no. Unless his new love interest is Deb, ABSOLUTELY NOT. Are you insane?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hells yes. If, and it is a big if, a new character that is dynamic and strong, I think it could bring so much to the show. Someone who challenges him. I think it is pretty obvious that is an avenue they most likely will take with the new character that Strahovski is playing. She actually can be a very interesting actress and I am anxious to see what happens. It's all in the execution.

  9. What exactly means "new love interest"? Because I would like him to be with Debra and now I don't know whether to vote for "yes" or "no" (does "yes" mean a completely new character or does it mean just "I want Dexter to be with someone again")?

  10. i guess no, unless if Deb can understand him snd it will be easy for both of them to keep more stronger relationship.

A blonde woman posing as Dex's love interest..? How original. Not contrived and corny at all, especially after the Lumen fiasco.

    1. I hate to say that but I really agree with your past two comments :)
Bringing new character, who looks like a mix between Lumen and Rita (and behaves probably like Lila) as a new love interest for Dexter, just two seasons before the very end and after all he's been trough... That would be really irresponsible and insane... And it would be especially bad because it would kill all the clever options they have now. If he's going to be with someone, then I think the only possible love interest for him now is Debra. And if he isn't supposed to be with her than please let him rather be alone...

We agreed on something. Shit does happen after all! :)

    3. @Moony: Agreed, 100%! Irresponsible is a great way to put it. Sure, Yvonne could easily play a sexy, exciting, and challenging femme fatale in Dexter's life (that's the only kind of character I can REALLY envision her being) - but remember the LAST time we had a crazy femme fatale? A gross, English, titty vampire by the name of Lila? ;) Yeah, that was a train wreck at best. I wanted to slit my throat the last half of Season 2. The writers really do have a LOT of clever options that a new romance would complicate. And I want to see Dexter really allow himself to be intimate with Debra, whatever that may look like... the show should focus on discoveries and progressions in that relationship, with the other plot lines that are introduced.

and someone molests her corpse. maybe, then.

anyway, i think they've learnt their lesson with lumen. i don't see them going there again. these romance storylines don't fit the show's character. and in season 5 they did not even make an effort to add a challenging theme to their relationship. it was so clean and conventional. i wanted to vomit. and for crying out loud, having him avenge a rape? a rape revenge storyline? dex as the avenger?! as if they wanted to make him likeable all of a sudden. something that's been done to death before and taking place in a serial killer show? it started out fine as a season. i loved the scene where he told the kids their mother was dead wearing that mickey hat. genius. :) and boyd fowler was more interesting than all of the big villains that showed up later on. and then lumen appeared. i knew what was going to happen after that, i just didn't want to accept it. episode 8 and i was still in denial. wasn't rita supposed to be the blonde mother substitute that needed to be saved? they had to go there again? after making such a bold move with rita's death? they took it all back. season 5 contributed to season 6 flaws that still managed to have plenty of brighter moments than season 5. i noticed there was a lot of hate towards lila but that character was intriguing. lumen was...nothing. why all the love? i've yet to come across a satisfying explanation. and i see that people are still asking for a dex romance even now that debra's exciting storyline begins to unravel. something that can provide depth, character development and lots of dark humour. :) and they still ask for stupid romance. i dont get people.

ps i think julia stiles would have been good as a different character. they didn't give her much to start with. it wasn't her fault. that character was one dimensional. there was nothing she could have done to save lumen.

    5. I actually enjoyed the Lila story. She was insane. And she 'got' Dexter. Because he is insane too. The one thing that annoyed me was her accent. I'm English and her 'home counties' accent was sometimes a bit odd. And yet she was an English actress... V strange. I heard somewhere that she was asked to have vocal lessons because she didnt sound English enough (not sure if that was for Dexter or another US show completely). But she understood just how lonely Dexter must have been keeping his terrible secret and darkness. She got it completely. But she tried to kill Rita's kids. Big mistake.

I also enjoyed the Lumen story. That whole season was about Dexter trying to redeem himself for the guilt he felt over Rita's death. Avenging Lumen's abuse and helping her to overcome her own darkness enabled him to feel that he had avenged Rita's murder. I know he killed Trinity but that was before he knew of Rita's death. Trinity had had the final say. Apart from Lila, Lumen became the only other woman in his life who got to see and accept his darkness and compulsion albeit for her own purposes. For some reason, season 5 has been the only season that seeped into my subconscious and into my dreams at night. And yet, I wouldn't say it was a favourite. It just must have captured my imagination somewhere.

But that season is done. Now the only woman who knows is Deb. That is where the development must lie, surely? I would be confused if at this point they introduced a new 'love' interest. I'm not sure what purpose it would serve? Other than for MCH to get his clothes off...

    7. I blame it on the females who watch the show. Keep this up and we could have Kristen Stewart as love interest for season 8. Sparkling in the sunlight of course.

I have nothing against females in general! I love all races, happiness, Michael Jackson.

    8. Tss, we are not all the same ;) And I doubt that there is a lot of women who think the "Kristen Stewart" way and still watch, enjoy and understand Dexter...

    9. Nowhere in that post was I serious, except for the last part. Hopefully you didn't really mind. :) But seriously, most people who wants to see him in another relationship only does so to see Michael shirtless. Either that or they are the ones who don't understand Dexter very well. Also, since there's only 2 more seasons can you really see him in a new relationship if it isn't Deb?

  16. Hahaha! Giving Yvonne to Masuka... I love it. I love it. That would be bomb as hell. ;) Yeah, personally, I don't think that Dexter should have a romance with someone new. I realize that not everyone is in favor of an intimate Deb/Dex pairing (understandably so); but if anything, I'd prefer that. Despite Dexter's love and sacrifices for Debra, he has really managed to keep her from TRULY knowing him - the writers need to take the time to dive into Debra really getting to SEE him, and with the complication of her romantic feelings AND Dexter falling for someone else, I think that Deb would burst. Whether as siblings or companions, I wanna Deb and Dex come to an accord. Somehow. That should be the emotional focus, I think.

  19. It doesn't have to be a soul-mate/we're both damaged deal like Lumen, nor something as toxic as Lila, or something so guarded as Rita. It could be more adversarial with some serious chemistry - something more on the lines of the classic male-female cop equation, but with more of a Dexter twang to it. I'd like to see him attracted (in his own way) to another woman.
But I do not want Deb hyper-ventilating and sucking all the oxygen out of the show for another 2 seasons. Her feelings for Dexter are just not being handled with enough depth or complexity. It feels like a cheap ploy, and worse - it's just downright tedious.

    1. I'm sorry, I can't get behind any of your statements 4:07.

The first paragraph I have no problem with other than the fact that this is not Castle or Bones. We don't want to go there with the whole antagonistic buddy cop love story. Shit like that starts in the pilot and is drug out until we are all barfing on ourselves. It's strictly network TV worthy and in this case it's too late in the game anyway.

As for the second part? Talk about sucking oxygen out of a room!
What a sour outlook on Deb in season 6! Her character arc was awesome last year. She was one of the best things about the show in season 6 and the actress deserves an Emmy nod for her run. No one character has grown as much on this show as Deb has. The first season she was just the annoying kid sister who was cluelessly in love with her brother and seeking an outlet through random men. This season she was really coming into her own - which started by dumping the dillweed. She was pushing Dexter and challenging him at every step - which ultimately led to the point we are at.

It was no "cheap ploy" it was a collision course that has been building steam since the very beginning. Both the realization that she is in love with/has idealized her foster brother and finally coming face to face with his Dark Passenger. It was rock solid writing to play it the way they did: By setting out to woo her "idealized" version of Dexter, Deb discovered who he really is. Good stuff!!!

I just wish the suspense/thriller aspect of the show was on the same level as the character bits. But the writer who was responsible for the best suspense parts of Dexter (MR) is gone. The new writers that handle that part of the show just aren't on her level yet - and that's nobody's fault. This is a quirky show that requires an odd sort of balancing act between humor, horror, drama, and suspense. I can't even imagine how hard this thing would be to write - and it's probably why some of the staff writers are off doing movies or running their own shows!

There is a point in all of this, where fans feel entitled to just pop off on anything - even if it makes no sense. In this case, popping off on the highlight of the whole season is a rather curious choice. I mean, each to their own, but this smells like the same mentality as showing up to school in a bad mood and proving how cool you are by pushing around the nerdy kid with straight A's - you know, the one kid who 20 years down the road is going to be a millionaire, but will now hate your guts!

Yea, that was the wrong choice.

  20. I am afraid that if Deb and Dex got intimate her head would explode.. It is her character.. And agree with Lumen she was so one dimensional... although Rita was Half dimension... Lila was quite a character, strong even.... But i really think that they need to avoid love for Dexter this season.. He has some other sh*t he needs to work out... Maybe he hooks up with a Russian Stripper?

  21. Is Dexter really a sexual being? He once said that he thought it was undignified. Yes, he has gone there because it was expected of him and became a must for his facade to remain intact.

I would say... my interpretation... when I have watched the kill scenes (played superbly by Hall), at the moment the knife plunges in, THAT is the equivalent of his sexual release. You can see it in his face. It's just like a climax. No sex will ever live up to that. Not for him. His victims are the only ones he truly gets 'intimate' with.

It's almost like he's trying to kill that aspect of himself that he loathes so much, over and over (it's no coincidence that he only kills killers, of which he himself is one also). Deep down he hates his compulsion. He thinks killing will bring him some kind of relief, some peace. And it does temporarily. But it is self-defeating because in the end it just feeds the self-hatred, loathing and compulsion. He continues to do the very thing that he is trying to cleanse himself of. He's actually a really sad character!

    1. Well, even though it sounds quite weird, when I read the books and the passages in which he describes his urge to kill, how he feels during that and after, it startled me how much it sounded like if a normal person would speak about a sex urge, the act of sex and climax -_- I thought I was the only one who got that feeling, but... Maybe he really replaced the normal need of sex by need of killing. After all, as someone here has said before - Dexter is Freudian as hell and watching his mother, the closest person he had, die when he was just a little boy... Guess this can do that...
On the other hand - Dexter keeps saying how much he hates sex (especially in season 1), but he was the one that wanted to sleep with Lila, he surely didn't have to do that and what is more, Lila didn't get him into bed, he did. With Lumen it was the same... And Rita... After while he didn't seem to hate the normal way of relationship anymore, at least not so much. I think he is just afraid to let someone be too close to him - he desperately wants to share every aspect of him with someone, yet he is afraid of it at the same time. Which is quite logical given the fact WHO he actually is. He doesn't seem to hate sex with someone in who he has an absolute trust and in who he can confide with everything. He probably just hates sex with the people who don't mean so much to him - which is again understandable as sex is such an intimate thing...
Huh, feels weird to write so long about Dexter and sex... -_-

    2. Dexter and Sex. Discuss.

We need a whole new thread for that!

Thanks for your view. Very interesting. My observation is that he has used sex as a means to an end, in order to manipulate or sustain the status quo. With Lila, at that point when he first had sex with her, he was so mad. Because of her 'mentoring', he was feeling out of control, a new experience for him. I think he wanted to kill her. But of course, at that point, she did not fit the code. So he violently throws her on the bed and does the next best thing. That scene was quite cold and aggressive.

Rita was all about maintaining his cover. I think he developed a strong connection with her but he knew she didn't truly know him so it was all false.

Lumen got to see and experience and even share Dexter's deepest darkest secret. She saw, and she accepted, and she desired. In her eyes, Dexter was not a monster. He found some release from his self-hatred in the form of Lumen's acceptance and support. And it made him feel better about Rita. Ironically, she turned out to be using him in order to facilitate her own revenge. Once it was completed, she buggered off... Not as clinical as that, but still that is how it went down! But Dexter swiftly recovered.

No, his 'sex' and 'first love' is The Kill. Nothing else compares. Well, not up until this point, anyway.

    3. The entire series is about Dexter becoming more and more human (remember that scene in season 3 when Dexter has been captured by the skinner and realises that he actually loves his unborn son), and the first step was that he started to enjoy sex (just watch the first season again: he has a sudden realisation, goes to Rita's house and sleeps with her)

      Delete
    4. That is true.

My understanding, though, is that he had had sex before Rita, several times. But each time, the girl left him afterwards because they sensed something terribly cold and wrong with him. The reason he picked Rita was because initially she did not want to have sex.

After having sex with her for the first time (which he tried so hard to avoid, and which was not particularly sensual or loving at all) he assumed Rita would dump him. The fact that she didn't played into his hands and helped him to maintain his cover (he did not need to start building up a new cover from scratch with someone else, as he was expecting to).

I don't believe he enjoys sex the way normal men do. My point was merely that it is The Kill and only The Kill that really, truly turns him on. Maybe he has grown to enjoy sex a bit and at the same time he does not actively seek it out. A whole year passed since Lumen and there had been no hook up (or at least none that was hinted at). That past year, his focus had been entirely on killing, completely disengaged from sex or relationships (other than his son). In season 6, his sexual encounters were insignificant (actually, I saw little point to them to be honest).

Yes, I agree the whole series is about Dexter becoming more in touch with his humanity. At the present moment, The Kill and his compulsion to do it still takes priority over everything else. It's his release. It's what excites him, thrills him and satisfies him the most, in a way that most people enjoy climatic sex! Whether over the next two seasons that changes for him remains to be seen.

But at present I still think it remains true that given the choice between having sex and killing one of his victims, he would always choose the latter. The climax of the kill is more enticing and compelling for him.

I'm still not sure what "new love interest" would bring to Dexter's world that would be any different to previous 'love interests'. The only person, surely, to engage Dexter differently, must be his sister Deb. His 'meticulous' world has started to crumble seriously. Can he still outsmart his sister? Will he even need to?

    1. I don't see how she could have a normal life again after what she went through. Being abused like that and then hunting them all down. Any relationship after that would be so hard because she could never share that with them. 25. I don't understand why so many people seem to miss Lumen. She was the weakest character they ever wrote and the only character I really hated. She was just using Dexter all the time to avenge her - I never believed she felt the same about him as he did about her. After all she has just been raped - raped women tend to hate all men for a long time, until they can keep on living as before the rape. He was just someone who was doing her work for her. And as he risked his life for her so many times, she never seemed she would do the same for him. And when everything was finished, she left him... Maybe the last one she didn't plan, BUT STILL. She just left him, without crying or whatever...
To me, she was just a b*tch who was using Dexter nastily and I'm very grateful that she's gone for good (as the writers said before)...
BTW am I wrong if I think that most of you, who want Lumen back, wants her back just because they don't want Dexter to be in a relationship with Debra (because that is "SOOO incest and they are half siblings anyway")?

P.S.: OF COURSE Debra and Dexter aren't half siblings. Just a lot of people who hate the Deb/Dex thing seem to keep saying this stupid mantra.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The writers just end every relationship as soon as it works:
In season 4, Rita started to discover that there was something Dexter didn't tell her about (he destroys the neighbour's lights, gets arrested, tells her he isn't in control of his demons,...), so she got killed.
The scene with Dexter and Lumen on the boat after they dumped Jordan's body would have been a perfect end for the entire series, but instead she left him.

And now there's only Debra left. Don't get me wrong, I'd like Dex and Deb to hook up. I just think there would have been better ways to end the series.
