POLL: What Do You Think the Title of Episode 7.01 Means?

The title of the season 7 premiere of Dexter has been revealed! It is called "Are You...?" and the episode is written by Scott Buck. Since yesterday that the episode title was announced there are a lot of assumptions about the meaning. What's the complete sentence of the title? Vote below!

  2. Unimaginative, crap title. A sensationalist tease. There's no doubt now that the show is a victim of it's own popularity, and most definitely losing it's class.

  3. "......going to turn me in?" I have to agree with some one else's comment: the show has gotten too big for itself. Bad choices are being made. The only thing that might remotely redeem Deb's "feelings" for her brother is if her therapist was somehow being manipulated by La Guerta. Could La Guerta be somehow forcing the Dr. to guide Deb down this line of thinking in an effort to make her appear unreasonable, amoral, and off-balanced, thus ruining her reputation both on and off the job?

    1. I wouldn't say the show has gotten too big for itself but yes the theme they chose to explore (religion) ended up being a bit boring long term. The doomsday killers and Dexter journey last year sort of failed to grab my attention I admit, it was just too shallow I guess. But Debra journey certainly did. In many ways, season 6 was her season. I just wish they didn't put all the guest stars. In the end they really didn't bring much and were either not used well (Gellar) a bit ridiculous (Travis) useless (Ryan, Louis, Anderson) or killed before making any kind of real impact (Sam). Dexter with his son and babysitter sort of formed a family unit and in stark contrast, Debra was the one who ended up being isolated. it was her mind that was explored last season. Some may have found it boring or shocking or disgusting but I loved it. She was the real guest star of season 6.

Why do you think Debra's feelings has to be 'redeemed" or excused by some manipulation... by Laguerta or the therapist or anyone else for that matter ? She had an epiphany (they even spelled it out in her dream). The therapist was just a guide. Her feelings may be "moraly wrong" for some but it doesn't make them any less 'true". And it is certainly worth exploring.

I find your theory a bit odd I admit (please don't bite me ;) . Laguerta while being highly manipulative is not a "villain". In the show her relationship with Debra has always been peculiar but she never went "too far", and each time they clashed, their exchanges was always frank and brutally honest. At least that's the way I saw it. And I always sort of perceived Laguerta as a reluctant friend of Debra. But still a friend. She was jealous and dismissive of Debra in season 1 and 2, formed a real friendship in season 3, 4 and 5 (yes she used Debra as a scapegoat but Debra didn't really suffer any consequences from it and with the barrel girl Laguerta admitted she was wrong). In season 6, all her manipulations was revealed to be a means to an end, to secure a promotion and get Mathews out of the way, Debra was just collateral damage. And when Debra asked for help she wasted no time and said yes, she even comforted Debra at the end. Laguerta wasn't present much in season 6 but I never saw a hint that she was that "corrupted". She may be self-centered and loving the power a bit too much but when it's about the work and Miami Metro she has (at least some of) her priorities straight...

Man, I didn't mean to write such a long post. Anyway that's just my own views ;)

Most of what I would say, Cain has already said.

I keep seeing this ongoing "sensationalist" statement. I've pointed it before, and I will say it again. At it's core value, Dexter is a sensationalist show. It always has been. It's flashy, absurd, and over the top - and people love it for being so, which is why Lithgow was so popular, because he embodied sensationalism.

The villains from season 5 and 6? Not so much. Their acting methods were far more subtle. The issues in the past two seasons have been almost entirely "casting", issues.
You just don't cast Colin Hanks or EJO in over the top roles, and even Johny Miller was a stretch. They were going for names rather than the right "fit" for the show - I mean, just think who is out there in budget range, that would be PERFECT for Dexter villains: Garret Dillahunt, Alan Tudyk, Callum Keith Rennie, Arnold Vosloo, Joaquim de Almeida - the list goes on! The only villain they really nailed the last two seasons? Peter Weller (who is on my above list for best bad guys). When you want to cast a sensationalist bad guy, you cast a guy who is GOOD at being a sensationalist bad guy - you don't roll the dice on actors who are too iconic in other roles. And before you say that Lithgow was a chance, no he wasn't - before he did 3rd rock, he was the quintessential journeyman "sensationalist bad guy" in several movies.

Every show has their thing. Dexter is what it is. I mean, look at the show that is winning most of the awards right now - Breaking Bad. What does it do? It does "cool" and it does "melodrama" and it never deviates from that formula. They cast cool bad guys and write preposterous situations full of melodrama and it works, and it works well.

The main problem I see with Dexter right now? Whiniest fans in television history!

  5. I don't mind the title, I quite like it in fact. But as I said in another thread I imagine her not finishing that sentence actually. Like she literally can't.

I don't know, Debra has a way with words true, but that one moment at the church, I think she'll be just too in shock to say anything. That's why I sort of expect her to say it to Dexter at the end of the episode... then it'll fade to black and the next episode will pick up a few days/weeks/months later (and It would solve the Harrison age thing since it would be no real problem story wise if he was absent for an episode, especially the first of this new season).

Of course that's just my opinion ;) but I think in this instance, silence is more powerful than words.

What I hope the writers will avoid, is the big long explanation/exposition scene that comes with that sort of big reveal, all in one episode : " You're/I'm a killer, I'm a serial-killer, I killed my brother, you're the bay harbor butcher, etc etc." Debra is not a idiot and she can and probably has to some extent, already pieced it all together without Dexter walking her through it.

Then again, maybe we'll have the long explanation/exposition scene and it will work nicely, the actors certainly can pull it off.

  8. Happy to hear your comments, Cain. La Guerta has proven herself to be capable of questionable actions for her own professional advancement. I don't view her as being evil, but nor do I view her and Deb as being "in with each other". La Guerta did not want to promote Deb, and hoped that she would fail in her new position. It wouldn't surprise me if La Guerta pulled some strings to try to make that happen.

    1. Thanks, I don't comment much (I prefer lurking) because putting thoughts into words is not always easy, especially for a complex show like Dexter, but I do try my best ;)

Yeah, at first she really wanted Debra to fail (and she did try to undermine her in a few episodes) but that was because of Batista and all the baggage between them, it didn't have much to do with Debra herself. She may be a bitch but she does genuinely care for Debra, always has (it was shown throughout the series).

She admitted several times that Debra was a great detective and yes admittedly she was right to say that Debra was too young and the job was rightfully Batista's, but I think towards the end (the roof scene in episode 12) she kind of just admitted to herself I think that Batista would always be on Debra's side and abandoned his dream of being lieutenant (so she kind of let him go) and that Debra has proven herself as a competent lieutenant. She had a little epiphany of her own lol ;).

That doesn't mean I like Laguerta as a character because let's face it she's really bitchy and was really too bipolar last season but on the whole I think the writers had to make her (a bit) sympathetic again in the end because otherwise her character would be too one-dimensional and all the relationship evolution between Debra and Laguerta (throughout the series) would have been for nothing.

Not that I expect their relationship dynamic to change that much, she's still Debra's boss and bitchy fights will probably occur.

Of course that's just what I felt watching the show, I could really be reading this all wrong.

  9. I went with "...Going to Kill Me?" With Dexter being the one to ask it.

  10. I don't what the title is going to mean. But I do hope it is interesting as now it has been dragging for a long time. Since more and more characters are coming, it is becoming an emotional drama.

  11. They are dragging and becoming more unrealistic.

Explain to us how it is more unrealistic now, than it was in early seasons. Don't just come here and flick boogers - at least explain your theory.

  13. If this is one of Deb's lines, I think it means "Are you actually doing this?I mean, are you actually here, in front of me, killing the Doomsday killer?".If this is one of Dexter's lines, then I think it means "Are you going to turn me in?" or "Are you going to judge me for being what I am and what I used to be for my entire life?".What do you think?

  14. Deb passes out from all of her emotions after seeing him kill, the question Are you? is Dexter - Are you OK Deb?, you passed out. Which of course he had time to clean up and it becomes all a dream to her and he continues his legacy......

    1. BLASPHEMY!

But seriously, if Deb died, what would they do for the eighth season? Have Dex go into an all-out rampage? Doubt it.

  16. I really have very mixed emotions on Deb knowing Dexter is a killer. I think it could blow the whole main idea of the show and the original seasons. I agree the shows have not been as intense as the earlier seasons. The season with Lithgow in it was the best one. I could not wait to see the new one week after week. The season with Julia Stiles as Lumen was a very good one too. Another season I could not wait for the next show. The seasons have gotten weak. Whatever has changed, the writers need to go back and revisit the beginning, the great seasons before it is too late. What I love about Dexter is that it is so different from other types of series. It seems the show is now turning into the same as all the other types of cop shows on T.V. This was a rare idea for a show and it worked. One of the best shows and it needs to go back to being what it was originally meant to be. Keep it simple and unique. Anything goes. Forget about morals, etc, that is why it is fascinating. I wouldn't want people to get away with what they do on Dexter in real life, but unfortunately, they probably do. After all, this is a unique idea. I never thought I'd be cheering for the serial killer of any show. I love this show and look forward to every new season. Please give us back the good seasons. I do agree that the guest stars need to be really given a lot of thought. They need to be able to carry off the bad guy like Lithgow and Stiles did. Please, give us back Dexter!!!!

  17. I predict that at the end of season 7, Debra and Harrison are killed in an accident. (car crash, plane crash etc etc.)
Dexter loses all direction in life, has nobody to live for and his dark passenger takes full control in season 8.
