POLL: Do You Want the Writers to Continue the Dex-Deb 'Romance' In Season 7?

Only few weeks left until the beginning of the production for the seventh season of Dexter. One of the plot 'twists' that divided the fans in the sixth season, was that Deb realized that she's in love with her brother (As we know they are not blood-related). Scott Buck said that writers have considered the possibility that Deb might carry romantic feelings for Dexter almost since the start of the show. What do you think? Do you want the writers to continue this storyline in the seventh season? Vote below!

  1. they've alredy planted the seed so go for it. i dont actually want them to be together though but it is an interesting conflict to explore.

  2. I think that Deb will show to Dexter that "she loves him" by keeping the secret that Dex killed Travis. So I think that they will not continue this.

  3. What kind of a waste would all of Deb's therapy sessions be if they didn't explore it? Besides, it certainly does seem to fit with the characters and Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter have great chemistry with each other, so I'd be confident that they could pull it off well.

    1. They have to follow up, they have no choice, but they have got to get it under control. It's ruining the intrigue. Dexter used to be witty, suspenseful and funny, but if they make too much of this it will become a romanitc drama. That's my fear.

    1. Last time I checked, the blood says otherwise. :P

    2. Blood doesn't always matter when it comes to someone being family. They grew up their whole lives as siblings...there for they are siblings!

      Delete
    3. Therefore, they are siblings until one of them admits they are in love with the other. Therefore, it doesn't matter. That supersedes them being siblings.

    4. Dex91 you're totally right!!!!!

    5. The fact that they aren't blood related gives them more permission to explore their feelings for each other.

  6. Talk about your "bromance". No thanks. Make it a bad dream that one of them had and get back to the important thing, Michael C. Hall!!!

  7. if you don`t you will have lost all respect as writers imo. stick to your guns! otherwise you should have listened to the moral police who would have taken you off air from the get go. i love Dexter, but a water down Dexter isn`t worth my time.

  8. It's pretty simple. Finish the story you started and ignore the whiners, the morons, and crazy fangirls that see so much chemistry they get jealous (like anon at 2:54).

They aren't going to stop watching. In fact, most of them will like it even if they are saying they won't. People who pretend to be shocked, and morally offended, well, they usually aren't.

Human beings are habitual liars: "I don't watch porn, it's icky!" "I don't drink very often!" "I only go to the casino with $20 cash and I gamble ALL NIGHT long until I use up that money!" "Omg, incest, that's sooo wrong!"

Write what is compelling. Write the story that has been set up. If you foreshadow that they are in love for years, and then come out and say it - it's a done deal. Consummate the thing, don't chicken out now. If I wanted to watch a show where the stupid masses had input on storylines - I would be watching shit on Network TV like American Idol, House, or Bones. Please, last time I checked, this is Showtime not the fucking Disney Channel, not the Christian Broadcasting Network. There's a reason I pay for premium cable and/or Blue Ray discs.

    1. I object to the story line not because I have any moral objection to it, but because it was poorly written and executed. I didn't think they forshadowed it for years, just this last season. And frankly watching those therapy segments was boring. They need to get a better show runner and get back to their previous style of good writing.

    2. I remember sitting with my friend watching Empire Strikes back years ago. When Vader comes out with the whole "Luke, I am your father!" bit, my friend was totally shocked.

I am like, really? You didn't see that coming? I mean, the whole Kenobi aversion thing, Vader in the tree with your own face? "Nope!" he tells me. "Why would a chopped off Vader head with Luke's face mean that Vader was his father? That doesn't make ANY sense!"

I guess to him, it didn't. It was too just too subtle.

What can you do. Some batters just can't hit a curve.

  9. I think they have to now because its a little too late not too. However I wish they never went there in the first place, it's borderline disgusting.

I have been with this show since episode one and I love it and even if they they end up spooning for a couple episodes I'll still be there.

This is MY oppinion so fuck y'all.

    1. Patrik, I don't think anyone cares that you made a typo it's cool.

I kind of agree with you. I would have been ok if they left it as subtext and we all just sorta "knew" they had a thing, but the characters remained stupid on the subject. However, you don't invite a bunch of people to your BBQ, cook up some nice steaks, and then suddenly decide not to serve them up because you found out many of your guests are vegetarians. The carnivores are going to wind up hungry and pissed off.

I am not down with the whole "disgusted" thing - but then I am pretty liberal. What happens between consenting adults who are not genetically related - is fine with me. I loved 6 Feet Under. Did I enjoy the man on man love? Absolutely not, being a straight guy, NOT my thing. However, it fit the story and the characters so I was not offended. Whenever Dexter and Doakes were about to get it on, I would just make my way to the kitchen for a beverage and stare into the refrigerator till my wife called "CLEAR!".

    2. I like the abrasive tone of "fuck y'all" from the previous, followed by this self conscious comment.

+ 1 just for making me laugh. Not that I agree, mind ;)

  11. Yes exactly the train already left the station. They can't just ignore it now, that would upset even more people. And again, I'm not extremely butt hurt by this at all, I just prefered it if they never went there at all.

  12. No it should not continue.

  13. They didn't explore dick. However well-performed the scenes might have been, the whole Deb at the shrink track was a travesty. It added nothing for the plot, nor did it enhance Deb's shock at the end. Deb would have been deeply shocked even if she had just had sisterly feelings towards Dexter.
Yes, they can't just throw Deb's feelings out now but they should wean it out. It was an unnecessary distraction that undermined the whole Doomsday plotline. It will continue to undermine Season 7 simply because it has a cheap trick-sensationalist smell about it which is bound to dominate the discussion in every fan base.

    1. Hysterical.

We have a show with blood-drained frozen hookers chopped into bits, kill rooms full of plastic wrap, graveyards of bodies in 40 feet of water off the Miami shore, Dick Solomon dragging naked teenage girls into bathtubs and slicing them up, and you say that a love story between emotionally damaged adopted siblings is "Sensationalist".

What the fuck did you think you were watching? The Wire? Law & Order? The Jim Lehrer News Hour? It's a show about a mad nerdy genius vigilant serial killer. THE ENTIRE FUCKING CONCEPT IS SENSATIONALIST!!!!

Are you kidding me with this bullshit? Are you one of those people who goes out to eat at the Cheesecake Factory and complains to the waiter that there is too much cheesecake on the menu?

I've read some silly posts here before, but this one goes to the top of the list. As a reminder, next time you go to the zoo, LOOKOUT! There might be animals there!

  17. Wasn't there a similar dream sequence with Brenda in Six Feet Under: she dreamt about being physically intimate with her brother then woke up with a start? Penultimate episode, I think. Can't quite remember. This storyline is not new, certainly not in the UK. There was a story about two adopted siblings that found love together etc in a UK 'soap opera' that was shown at 7.30pm on BBC1 so as a Brit, this storyline doesn't shock me. Some women subconsciously choose men who are similar to their fathers and/or brothers anyway (and vice versa, although I appreciate that's not the same thing as actually acting out with your sibling). Whether it is 'realistic' to act out certain instincts with your sibling (blood related or not) is another thing but the whole show is clearly a fantasy so I'm not sure how 'realistic' it needs to be. It's a tightrope between fantasy and believability. To me it is a fun show that touches on some interesting issues but ultimately I don't feel it takes itself too seriously. However, the fact that it has people talking about this kind of stuff is, in my opinion, a good thing. Do I want the storyline to continue? I think it will be interesting to see how the dynamic will change between these two characters. It's messy. But that's what makes it interesting. I think 'feelings' are complicated and can change easily. I'm 'open' to whatever the writers want to throw at me. It's been an interesting ride so far. I actually find the show very funny. Not sure what that says about me! But I appreciate there are complex issues at stake also. The whole character of Dexter is unique, complex and organic. He is evolving, as we all are. Deb holds the key. But I'm not quite sure 'how'. So yes I will be tuning in. I especially enjoy the humour. I enjoy Dexter's sense of humour. The show would be somewhat lacking without those voiceovers.

This is my first post so please be gentle with me!

Intelligent and thoughtful post, you did great for a first time out. Posting on Dexter boards, never the safest bet. It's not a uniformly great fanbase. The subject matter of the show acts like a giant vacuum cleaner, it picks up anything and everything! Dexter fans are a mixed bag of nuts, truly. I've not been a part of a fanbase that was this divided and ripped on the showrunners this much, since Sopranos!

Thank you for your positive feedback and encouragement :) Quite scary posting for the first time!

Just want to add a Leonard Cohen quote: "There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in."

Is Deb (and her discovery and feelings for Dexter) the crack that lets the light in? Or not?

  20. You know what? I think a lot of people are confusing their want to see this romance progress, with their want to see more of Deb in sexual situations. And to be clear, I just want to see Deb in more sexual situations. Lawd, help me. I do so love that tushie. :)

    1. Sorry, I love Jennifer Carpenter, but I don't necessarily want to see her in sex scenes with just anyone. As a matter of fact, every single scene she was ever in with Quinn or Anton. I hated like crazy. Lundy was cool, but aside from him - I like all scenes with Deb and Dexter.

It's the deep and complicated love between them that I am interested in.

As several posters have pointed out: The story reminds one of "Bride of Frankenstein" - you know, Harry being Victor, Dexter being the Monster, and Debra being the Bride. It's really creepy and cool.

  22. I honestly think they won't continue the storyline. I think they made her character build to that point like stepping stones so when she reaches the final stone of discovering Dexter, her love will change and she will not have those feelings anymore but it doesn't mean she hates him. She would just love him enough not to tell or turn him in but could never look at him romantically like that after discovering that her brother is not so perfect afterall. As much as I like for them to continue the storyline and see where this goes I think this part of the storyline reached its climax and is now going to ease with Deb not turning him in but not looking romantically anymore.

"I am deeply in love with you and have been carrying this love for my entire life, but oops, you are a serial killer! I still love you, but "not as much!" Really, not as much is enough for Deb throw away her belief system, break the law, and risk life in prison? REALLY? Sorry, you don't do shit like that for someone unless you remain deeply in love with them.

Let's be honest here, what you are describing is ridiculous.

You might as well have Dexter see the light, and turn in his butcher tools for polyester suit and a revival tent. I mean have you ever been totally fucking in love with someone, so much it tears your heart out? When you are in love, you are in love, it just doesn't "go away".

      Delete
    2. Well, she definitely loves him so deeply and for so long that she won't be able to get rid of her feelings - when you love someone this way, you can't do anything about it, you can't just decide to stop loving someone.
ON THE OTHER HAND, Debra is trying to be so tough that she will probably try to supress her feelings, as much as possible... And at first, it will work but as everything calms down and she'll again see Dexter saving someone or doing something like that, she'll realise that she still loves him and at this point she'll probably tell him... Just my gues :)
Anyway, I deeply wish them to continue this storyline - it has realy always been there, it's brave and it makes people talk about it all the time, it's just a perfect storyline...

Again, yes to everything you say. Love your posts. Part of storytelling for actors and for writers - is watching how people behave, learning how people "act".

Probably Deb is not going to say "I love you" right now, but like you said... it will come up again. She'll see the Dexter she has always known, in light of what she now knows, and she'll still love him. In much the same way the audience get's pissed at Dexter, but we still adore the character and want to see him win.

    4. Thank you very much, it feels nice to be appreciated :)
By the way to what you've said - exactly my words. Just like "Dexter" said in Debra's dream: "Everything isn´t always so black and white" - and so isn't Dexter himself :)

  23. I get it. They're not blood related, but it squicks me and feels too incesty anyway (because I've thought about them as bro/sis the whole time and I'm like...) Which is funny because it's a show about serial killer and it's the Deb/Dex thing that squicks me :P Go figure.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Of course yes. Romance is after all the ingredient of every story.

  25. Am I the only person who wants to see Deb pin her brother down and cuff him? I mean, I love Dex, really I do, but he's been getting sloppy for quite some time now. Would she really think twice about what he is? She knows who his brother was and she finds him in the middle of a f*ing kill room! it doesn't exactly scream "First-tme-killer". I really wish for once, Deb could be a detective and not a lovesick puppy. Come on, lets see the real monster in Dex as he manipulates his way out of this.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. He won't have to manipulate her very much. As the series goes on, Deb becomes more and more like her book counterpart, who accepts Dexter but is from time-to-time torn between him and her job. My guess is that she'll listen to what he has to say. The extent of manipulating Dex will really have to do is to not tell Deb that he killed that innocent guy back in S4.

Also, it's Deb. Dexter doesn't need to be Walter with her; he needs to be Dexter.

  26. Seriously, they need to continue this romance!!! It's a symbol people! It's a symbol of everything we who pray for acceptance for us homosexuals and our lesbian sisters!

Sure, they're almost brother and sister, being raised up together, BUT HOW MANY OF US WERE RAISED JUST THE SAME, HMM??

We don't get all prudish and disgusted when two people who have been friends since Pre-K and practically were brother and sister start seeing each other, hell, we're not even SURPRISED!!

But when two people who are raised together in the same home, but lacking the same genes are raised together and find love? Oh yes, somehow, we do find reason to scoff and sneer!

That is hypocrisy, my friends! Those of you who vote against this pairing and then go on later to show support for the homosexuals, please remember this!! You talk a good talk about freedom to love, but when it comes down to it, when you can finally do something, do you do it?? HMM??

Don't think of these two as brother and sister, i never have. Even in the books, because i knew it wasn't the case. These are not brother and sister! These are two people, a woman and a man (Admittedly one sociopathic man who kills people, BUT STILL A MAN!), not even a homosexual couple, who may or may not find love, AND HERE WE ARE OBJECTING!!

Keep your priorities in order people!!

This is our freedom we speak of! If God did not intend for us to find love with each other, no matter the gender, or how close we were... then he should not have given us the ability to do so! Adam and Eve were technically brother and sister, yet people tend to IDOLIZE them because they were God's first creations. Everyone seems to overlook that THEY had to populate the planet! How is that so different from this? This is what God intended people! whether or not he knew it at the time, this is what he did, what he gave us the ability to do.

So let us USE IT! Use our full capacity to love and to acknowledge the love of others!

They say Love is Pure. If so, then it matters not who the love is for, ONLY THAT WE FEEL IT AND EMBRACE IT!!

So please, vote for Debra's love to continue, not just for those who would like to see this pairing continue... but for those who would wish to find love with those that others would likewise not feel suitable. For those oppressed by racisim, homophobia, hobophobia, and other such oppressive nonsense.

Do it, for the betterment of the world.

I don't know where you got that weed, but I want some! ;) JK

Anyway, I'm not much about bringing God or morality into this, because it's just a work of fiction.

But yes, I do believe that caving into a segment of a very uptight fanbase is bad for art. Especially not when your main competitor (HBO) has shown the strength and resolve to laugh in the face of fans, critics, and internet bloggers - and hit what they are bitching at even harder, and shocking them and yet making them love it in the process.

The heart wants what it wants - it's bad enough that we live in a real world where people get oppressed and bullied all the time for being a little different, but when the knuckledraggers start screaming about TV characters and threatening writers jobs over what they feel is "good and decent" or "proper" it's a little scary.

Before the backlash started, I would have been fine with most ways this could have played out, but now I feel that if they back away, the shitbirds win and YOU NEVER want to allow the shitbirds to get their foot in the door.

      Delete
    2. For the betterment of the world? Seriously? I don't find it disgusting, or wrong (although it is a little bit of both) It's more unrealistic and gratuitous of the writers. Like someone is indulging in their own little fantasy and tapping in to that if others. If you take it from a distance, evaluating the writting and the construction of the scenes, it's a weak storyline. It seems almost as though it was created for shock value alone.
