  5. people need to understand that season 3 did a lot more good things through it's execution than season 5 and 6 could wish

    1. Random, people already understand.

Season 3 had two "great" episodes - "The Lion Sleeps Tonight", written by Scott Buck, and "Easy As Pie", written by Lauren Gussis (The two most consistent and best Dexter writers) but the story of the season really was a mess, most specifically the Miguel arc.

What happened to season 3 is that Clyde Phillips was behaving like a traditional TV producer. He was "stretching" key plot points in Dexter out. He tossed away any advancement in Deb getting closer to figuring out who Dexter was, brought in a complete stranger to find stuff out about Dexter, and then took him out and cleaned up all the loose ends. Season 3 was an attempt to turn Dexter into "formula" and aside from some brilliant moments it wasted an entire season of potential.

Compare with the key season 3's of other "great" TV shows. Look at the bold choices that BSG made in season 3? Starting off in a concentration camp setting, the whole Starbuck thing, and then POW that big finish with the revelation of the final cylons? Or how (I hate to do this) Season 3 of BrBa where Skyler finds out right off the bat and THEN they get her to a place of acceptance? But Dex? No, nothing significant happened aside from a baby. It was a "reset" season with a "friend" for Dexter that was made even more pointless when they repeated the theme of season 3 AGAIN in season 5.

So, yea, season 3 wasted a year - and contributed to the problems they had in season 5 and 6.

  6. I dont understand how people could rate season 2 so low. I found that season to be the most exciting, with Doakes and Lundy hunting down Dexter.

  7. Season 1 has to start with a bang. Character development is very important, and the writers did a great job of this. Trinity to me has to be the best season to me because of the fact that you have 2 characters that are so much alike in some ways yet so different in others.

  8. Season 3 was necessary for Dexter's emotional development, which is the a big part of the show.

But yeah season 4 is hands down the best one.

  9. @9:52 anonymous, I understand the criticism, but honestly the argument seems to be "since it was the first season to stray away from plot progression, it's the blame for other standalone seasons, therefore it's the worst". I don't agree with that at all though, because season 3, whether you found it to have a weak premise or not, was still executed a lot better than the stories season 5 and 6 offered. Also how can you penalize season 3 for season 5's existence? Shouldn't season 5 be deemed pointless when it does an awfully similar plot to something that came BEFORE it?
