  2. I picked S5 because of Julia Stiles. In terms of storyline S4 is the best though.

    1. Season 6 was the worst! Unbelievable that u can put in slightly close to 1 & 2

    2. In fact I liked every single season of Dexter for different reasons. Each is unique in my opinion but for me season 6 and 1 are the best because they are similiar. The way they kill people is the same their blood was drained, there are a lot of references to previous seasons which was never done before. Finally no Rita and Lumen. Back to the Deb/Dexter topic.

    3. Season 6 has the worst villain - Travis. But admittedly I didn't care because I was so entranced by what was happening with Dexter and Debra. Quite a few of us saw the love story coming on strong early in season 6. That whole "because it's never going to be YOU" Dexter said, was the big kicker for all the fans who were paying attention to the love story in subtext the five seasons. We were thinking "OMG, they are actually going to do it!"

If you notice the ratings... (aside from the premier) every single Deb/Dexter centric episode spiked big time, and then every time the focus was off of Dexter/Deb the ratings dropped again. That should be the bell *ringing* for the writers.

The more we plunge into that dynamic next year, the more people will want to see.

  6. 1,2,6,4,3,5

Season 6 just keeps getting better and better on re-watch, especially the Debra stuff. Jennifer Carpenter hit it out of the park and if she isn't nominated for an Emmy it's a fucking crime.

  7. I loved S2 because Deb really came out of her shell -- and Lilah was a real piece of work.
I would have to say that S5 was the season that captured my heart -- Dexter and Lumen, the intimacy of the killroom, and the bond they formed while plunging a knife into each of Lumen's attackers. What can I say? I guess I will always be a hopeless romantic.

  8. Season 1 hands down. Everything was on point from the music to the picture. Has to be the best shot season of the series. And suspense, never knowing who the ice-killer was. Season 1 then Season 4

First two seasons is where the true great Dexter lies...

    1. Are you OK? Season 4 was absolutely AWESOME. Season 1 in my opinion was as boring as Season 6.

    2. Tastes differ. Why is that so fucking hard?!
I for one don't get how you can compare the brilliant S1 with S6.

    3. In comparison with the awesome season 4, season 1 at the first 7 episodes was very boring. I don't understand why all this love about S1. It was an 8,5/10 and season 4 was a 10/10. Season 6 was 8/10.

Season 1 is "boring"? I don't even know what the fuck planet people come from anymore.

I suppose this is the same demo that prefers Die Hard over Lawrence of Arabia. =P

Many don't get the cinematic quality or authenticity of season 1. They don't notice the beautiful photography, the authentic miami locations, the sweat, the grit, the flawless story. Really one of the greatest seasons of Television ever produced - I'd put it up against anything.

I wouldn't call it cheap thrills, but yea, most viewers tend to overestimate Season 4 because they get mesmerized by Lithgow's "big" performance and infectious energy. Season 4 is "Opera" you know, kind of like Star Trek: "Wrath of Khan" whereas season 1 is more cerebral and textured, more "2001: A Space Odyssey"

I hope Season 7 hunkers down and does more quiet psychological stuff again. I really want to see the effect of Deb's knowing play out in so many ways. I want lots of dialogue between them, and I want to see all the little revelations she gets to have. I'd like to see Dex unleash his fury on someone right in front of her - you know, those little outbursts he has, where he takes someone down. Maybe a scene where someone puts some hands on her and he freaks and puts the hurt on them, just so we get to see the look on Deb's face. "Lab geek my ass!

  11. Deb did witness a little outburst from Dexter in the season 5 episode Teenage Wasteland. You know with the stepfather being taken out of the car forcibly by Dexter, and him being all angry and saying "if you hurt her I'll kill you! I'll fucking kill you..." Deb shocked face was a nice treat...

But yeah can't wait to see more of that. Who knows maybe he'll beat the crap out of Quinn in front of Deb in some episode. Dexter has been tempted before. In fact if I remember correctly, this season in the third episode I think, Deb has her first "meeting" as a lieutenant and Quinn is being a jerk to Deb (helped by Laguerta) and Dexter is glaring at him from behind, like Quinn is some disgusting insect he needs to squash.

Favorite season, well I have to agree that season 1 stood apart from the rest, for the atmosphere and mood alone. Camera work was oustanding too. it's a shame they didn't really pursue that in the following seasons.

  12. I don't know if I have a favorite. They're all great. But I really love season 1,4,5 and 6. And I'm too anxious for the next ones *-*

  13. Hah It's so weird that season 3 is my favorite but is generally considered as one of the weakest. Just loved Jimmy Smits as Miguel and his twisted relationship with Dexter. But the best thing is that there haven't really been a weak season.

  16. i dont know how im gonna vote yet but my opinion is

    1. great.. fresh, suspensful, lots of twists,
    2. was also great...so much was happening... doakes was a great enemy for dexter to have.. lundy was on his tail and lila let him get into his dark side... pity he had to kill her they could of made quite the twisted couple...
    3. fell off... worst season of all
    4. up there with 1 & 2... they came back way strong after the pityful season 3...
    5. was pretty good... the bond between lumen & dexter was good to see...liddie & quinn on his tail was also pretty good... dont know why it hasnt come up again... just cause a dude saves your ass when he coulda framed you doesnt mean you let him off for murder...
    6. pretty crap with a bombshell ending somewhere above season 3 but below everything else...

  17. First off, I don't think there has been a season of DEXTER that deserves to be called "crap." What our rankings really mean, is just an order of preference and everyone inevitably has different opinions. With a series like DEXTER, each season means something different to everyone. Personally, season 1 is easily my favorite. Like others mentioned, season 1 just had more of a darker atmosphere. Dexter was always humored by crime scenes, not horrified. He used to have to fake concern and pretend the crimes affected him on an emotional level.

    My order of preference:
    1, 2, 4, 3, 6, 5.

I can't justify placing Julia Stiles and Colin Hanks above Jimmy Smits' amazing performance in season 3. That, and I just simply enjoy season 3 more than 5 and 6. I've always thought Jimmy Smits was very believable as Miguel Prado. I never felt like while watching him on the screen that he was acting. His delivery always felt genuine and natural to me. Now that I think about it, I think I enjoy season 3 as much as season 4. I just placed season 4 over 3 because of the extra suspense it had. Season 3 also has Julie Benz, so that makes the decision of placing it above 5 and 6 just that much easier. I really enjoyed Julie Benz on the show and I still miss seeing Rita and Dexter on the screen together. Rita and Dexter are just one of those great tv couples and I will always remember and feel grateful that we got to experience it.

  18. Nice comments Nicholas.

Yea the people stating "crap" are pretty much just haters. If we were in season 2 right now, they would be telling us that season 2 was crap and the show has "jumped the shark" - because there are always going to be "those guys".

  19. Season 1 is my favorite because it was ultimately the season that hooked me initially. Nothing will ever top The Ice Truck Killer / Dexter dynamic. Also I found this to be the most visually stunning season.

Season 4 would be my second favorite. Amazing performances and twists and turns.

Season 2 was also really amazing, I loved that Dexter was the one being hunted and the intensity in if he'd be caught or not (before that story line was played out) was great.

Don't care much for the other seasons but I appreciate the story as a whole.

  20. Dexter!!!!!!! its addictive

Cant imagine watching any other TV series. Every season had its own twist and the cast and crew is awsome as always. cant wait for season 7 and Deb's reaction

  21. Season 3 is so underrated it's criminal

    ReplyDelete
  22. How is Season 2 not the best? The BHB drama, Lila (hot), and Doakes being caged like an animal and then dying from a gas explosion. That was a great season. Also, all of the seasons of DEXTER were great, so to the people that complain that Season 6 was bad, YOU DONT HAVE TO WATCH THE SHOW! If you dont like it, simply do not watch it.

  23. I liked s1 the best then 3 then 2 then 4 then 6 then 5. I for one liked miguel and the skinner, I think the skinner kill is one of my favourites, but the first tv kill in season 1 is still electric, Dex at his most feral.

Apparently, according to the whine-fest, and a small group of certain so called "fans" of the show, Dexer has jumped the shark because:

#1 Scott Buck and Lauren Gussis are suddenly bad writers and don't understand their characters - disregarding the fact that they have both written almost all the very best Dexter episodes of all time and established the characters to begin with.

#2 The Deb/Dex thing is "immoral" and an insult to brothers and sisters everywhere, who, apparently, can no longer fulfill their sibling tradition of watching Dexter together without being consumed by weird incestuous thoughts and feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable while wondering if Deb and Dex are going to make whoopee!

#3 Those same people think that Deb and Dex would never behave "immorally", and so if there is any feelings between them it would betray their characters. That they, and they alone, know the characters better than the writers, the producers, the actors, and the fans who happen to agree that there has always been "something there".

Obviously these opinions seem to be based solely on an overdeveloped sense of ego in the face of the fact that said opinion holders missed the nuances of a certain storyline, but what can you do?

I cannot help but think that fans like these, would have bitched and whined at the end of the 6th Sense and exclaimed "No way he was dead!" and then, when presented proof by re-examining all the scenes preceding that revelation, would have declared. "No way! You are just READING INTO things!"

It is a circular argument that cannot be won. You just have to let them go into their corner and suck on their thumbs, and cry about how Scott Buck stole their choo choo, until they want to come out and play again or not.

  25. Yup, Scott Buck and Lauren Gussis have written some of the best episodes of the series ('Dex, Lies, and Videotape', 'Morning Comes', 'Left Turn Ahead', 'Easy as Pie', 'The Damage a Man Can Do', from S2 and 3 alone) but they need more around them.

I'm still surprised Lindsay's name hasn't turned up; surely he'd want to give his character a good send-off on the series, right? Maybe Phillips will take on a bigger role now that the series is winding down as well. I might be dreaming, though.

But if I were, they would totally try to get Vince Gilligan on the writing team for S8.

  26. Season 3 is by far the best season, why is it the least liked? Season four, I could understand, being the best for you people, but I think that Season Five or Six... they are pretty much the same, except for the endings. Season One and Two are the same ways, like three and four, except there is one obvious winner with each group of seasons:

    1 vs 2: 2
    3 vs 4: 3
    5 vs 6: 6
    2 vs 6: 2
    6 vs 3: 3
    2 vs 3: 3

One obvious winner? Really? Sorry to say that all of this entirely subjective. From a pure aesthetic standpoint Season 1 is almost impossible to beat with it's authentic locations and cinema quality photography. All the other seasons are very "Television" quality in terms of the look and feel of the show. This is because Season 1 was the only season actually filmed in Miami for many of the shots.

I understand that most TV watchers don't notice things like cinematography and the like, but still, the quality and story in season 1 is untouchable for me, on, but that is to my taste. My best argument is that I have good taste! Again, subjective, but in my defense, about 60 of my favorite movies of all time have wound up on AFI's top 100 list, so I must not be a complete moron.

Season 2 is more of a "thrill ride" reminiscent of the best seasons of "24" - a great season, my second favorite in fact. Season 4 did what it did, and Lithgow was fabulous, but again, my problem with that seasons was the same as 3 "too little Dex & Deb" - but on the bright side, the huge lift that season 4, was that the Dex & Deb scenes were so awesome that it more than made up for the scarcity of them.

Most people cite the hospital scene in season 4, or Deb's breakdown in the parking lot. But my favorite Dex Deb scene from S4 was their conversation in the car in episode 4.3 "Blinded by the Light" Dexter has the family, Debra has Anton, and Lundy back in her life, but they are both really unhappy. They are complaining back and forth and saying essentially the same thing - it's that moment where you really see that they are missing the other, that they are "the same". That they are essentially two lone wolves used to only each other's habits and company. Deb states "Look at us, complaining that all these people want us..." there is a moment of awkward silence and they exchange looks and Deb nervously states "You should go..."

So poignant. So perfect. Definitely sexual tension between them. Of course, that was a Scott Buck written episode, ha!

Also, season 5 and 6 are getting over inflated bad raps because of the little things that television audiences do NOT pay attention to. #1 is that they are seeing a different Dexter. The post cancer Michael C. Hall has a little lower energy level and intensity, his performances are more reserved and smoldering, "weightier' and Dexter is no longer the humorous misfit, the energetic robot, or the frantic psychopath. He has fallen into sadness, darkness, and struggles between evil and remorse/guilt. Dexter season 1-4 was beyond good and evil, he was less human, less flawed, more "neat & tidy' - "squared away" in Harry terms.

The sadness he carries in 5&6 the audience feels uncomfortable with, and so they tend to criticize the show unnecessarily because it is not longer giving them the "vicarious thrill" they once had, when they were along for a ride with a Dexter who was riding on top.

I think the Deb's love and acceptance is the only thing that can revive Dexter for awhile, so I expect the audience to love season 7, despite the reservations of some about the love story. I think an intimate relationship with Deb, and I am not talking about "just sex" or "romantic love" or "brother sister love" but something that is a combination of all 3 and deeper than all three, more even than Deb "knowing" is going to bring life and vitality back to Dexter Morgan. So we may get a nice run of the old Dex back for 7 & 8 before it all comes crashing down.

    I remain optimistic.

  28. Season 4 is so overrated.

    ReplyDelete
  29. My favorite Dex/Deb scene in season 4 was the finale episode "The Getaway". When she tells him about Laura Moser and Brian. He looks so undone and lost for a moment. It kind of marks a shift in balance, in their relashionship, I think. She's getting more strong, he's getting more lost and confused. And we have the first real proof of how much HE relies on her, with the way he grabs her hand, almost desperately. And Timeline wise, its only a few days later, in the season 5 first episode, that Dexter hugs Debra so fiercely.
