Dexter Season 6 - Debra Morgan Gets Promotion

As we saw in the latest promo, in the sixth season of Dexter, Debra Morgan, gets promoted to Lieutenant and she replaces Maria Laguerta. That's a very interesting turn and it will change the partnership of the two women.

  1. I have a feeling they will kill her off this season. The whole "DNA" quote and her and Hall's divorce lead me to believe they are setting her up for a big storyline to kill her off.

  2. No fucking way! She's not going to die. When they say "the DNA of the show will change", they mean that she will find out about Dexter. Deb is a HUGE chapter of the show. They can't kill her.

  3. Anonymous, i think that Rusry723 means that they will kill Laguerta, not Debs.... And remember that Laguerta is dead in the books since the first one.... :-))))))

  4. Well actually it could be Jennifer Carpenters last season, she just got divorced from Michael C Hall, the writers/producers might think the chemestry (spelling?) dont work anymore.

That said of course I would love if Deb survive season 6. She is the one closest to Dexter and super huge character. But for sure seems like she will know Dexters secret in this season :)

    Can't wait!!

  5. It's about time! In the Dexter book series she is a Sergeant? Can't remember off the top of my head.

  6. Is she going to be dyking out any this season?

  7. It doesn't really make any sense. How do you go from Detective to Sergent to LT in a single year? Also Batista outranks her. You'd think he'd be in line before Deb.

  8. @ last commentator

I absolutely agree with u. Very odd!!! But I think I read somewhere that they skip 2 or even 3 years ahead. That might be an explanation!

  9. No, they've said a few times that the jump is one year. Unless Batista did something to prevent him from becoming the new Lt., then maybe both he and LaGuerta have been promoted (a lot)...although I don't think them both being promoted so much is likely.

  10. but here it says: 2-3 years!

Anyway, I hope you're right! I'm not a huge fan of such big leaps in time.

  11. LaGuerta must of gotten DEmoted! Matthews has Debs back, ever since the beginning. Plus, He has been at odds with Maria, so Batista and her must of jacked-up things bad. Matthews gave Deb the job.

  12. True, LaGuerta could have been demoted @neatmonster.

And for the other anonymous, the press release says 1 year: http://dextergr.blogspot.com/2011/09/dexter-season-6-press-release-showtime.html

...I guess with Deb becoming the new Lt. it almost seems like the time jump should be longer, that's probably why there's all this confusion.

  13. Anyone considered some other small points:

In an interview with David Zayas he confirmed that in the year since we have left, Batista and LaGuerta have separated and that their marriage has come to an end. It's entirely possible that:

Matthews has retired/died (he was fairly old, one of the old guys from Harry's days as a cop) and as one of the most prominent members of Miami Metro, breaking high-profile cases such as the Ice Truck Killer, BHB, Skinner etc have drawn her even more attention and she has been made captain.

Don't forget that Deb has worked relentlessly since joining Homicide; She broke almost every single case; I mean, she broke the Skinner virtually single handedly, she found trinity and broke the barrel girls case - if there's anyone who can prove they've got the clout to be able to solve crimes it's this girl.

Plus LaGuerta choosing Deb over Angel could be an important factor in the breakup of their marriage. DZ has said that he continues to be a brotherly/friendly figure towards Deb so he can't hold a grudge with her, but maybe his ex wife? Who knows...

Your theory is interesting : Laguerta promoted Captain and choosing Deb as Lieutenant over Angel.
But captain Matthew isn't dead in S6, we can see him in the trailer, he is either retired or promoted.
I think also this whole story of Deb becoming a Lieutenant could be a joke towards the new detective Mike Anderson.

  15. Deb isn't a lesbian lol.I'm pretty sure Jamie was talking to Harrison (who is probably sitting on Dex's lap on the couch while he and Deb are working in the living room) but directing the quote to Deb in a snarky/bitchy way. Maybe they don't like each other and that may have something to do with the fact that Angel has said that Deb is more of a sister to him. than his own sister (back in season 5 episode 8) As far as the whole Lt. thing, totally think Angel and Maria are at odds because he wasn't chosen over Deb and he should've been!Oh and they say that Quinn is acting weird towards Deb...wouldn't you be kinda weird if your girlfriend has professional power over you? Especially knowing Quinn has a kinda macho personality.

  16. @ Matthew Battles-
You bring up some good small points but they all prove that it should really be Capitan Debra Morgan. You wrote: breaking high-profile cases such as the Ice Truck Kill... etc have drawn her even more attention and she has been made captain.
If you are refering to Maria, I thought Dexter figured it out for everyone who was the ITK and Batista helped out as well. Maria jacked up that case and was demoted, so Pascal took over. Wasnt it Rock Star Special Agent Lundy, Deb, and once more Batista who figured out the BHB was someone in Metro? Maria was to busy trying to clear up Doakes. You are right about Deb cracking the Skinner case. Oh, and Maria did screw up the Fuentes Bros case @the club but of course threw Deb under the bus.
Maybe LaGuerta is going to be Captain but I hope the writers/producers justify that decision, cause Maria does Not deserve the promotion. I hope she was demoted, haha. Either way, it seems that Deb has the upper hand this season.

  17. @ neatmonster-

You have a point about how incompetent Maria is. Although you have to remember there's a chain of command (I didn't plan this argument btw so if it sucks don't blame me!)

You're right about how Maria was hardly involved in the successes (and she was definitely involved in the fuck ups!) but she's proven popular politically (or at least she was in S1) And I suppose that promoting a detective to captain over the shoulders of a (remember we live in a society where everyone is shit scared of being seen as racist) cuban lieutenant who (on paper) appears competent for the position having been at the top of the chain of command for those cases (except BHB).

Before you go and say "But Batista is also a higher rank than Deb and also Cuban!" He's made some serious errors in judgement in series 5 (geting involved in a bar fight etc) and while he's had those on his records, Deb had the barrel girls case, which she did solve entirely on her own.

    @Anonymous

I think that the Maria-Captain-Promoting-Deb-over-Angel theory is probably the most realistic.

Onto the point about Matthews, I didn't see him in the trailer but I guess I wasn't looking. It has been said in many seasons that he's been "bucking for deputy chief" - maybe he got that job and everyone got a bump but [see my post above for more on why Deb became Lieutenant instead of Angel] - that might also give a spin onto the reasons Maria was able to give for choosing Deb over her ex-hubby.

Oh and I think the lieutenant Morgan thing isn't a joke. In the trailer you see Deb say to Maria "I'm just about to interview MY choice for new detective..." Mike (whatever the guys name is) Andrews wasn't in the room then - plus look at the door behind her - I think it says "Lieutenant Debra Morgan"

  19. Last post tonight (I hope!)

All those people claiming that deb is a lesbian do me a favour:

Turn up your computer speakers as loud as they go, and when you hear a woman say what you think is "I came in here to give you a goodnight kiss..." (at least) try to keep your mind out of the gutter on lovely lesbian liaisons with a lusty lieutenant, and lean in closely what you'll here jamie Batista say is this:
"HE came in here to give you a goodnight kiss, not to look at pictures of dead bodies."

Think about what everyone has said this series is about, Dexter looking at the things he wants to (and not) pass onto his son. Mainly his desire to kill. I think it was about protecting Harrison from seeing dead bodies and thinking "hmmmm, I can make those!"

    Use your noodles people! :-D

  20. I think they demote LaGuerta and promote Deb to Lt. Many points validate this, and most have already been mentioned.

1)LaGuerta is an idiot. she single handedly ruins cases by holding grudges against fellow officers, has gotten numerous individuals PEDS killed over the seasons, and just makes poor decisions.

2)Bautista may not get promoted for a few reasons. One, the LT role has been an office/desk job. LaGuerta is rarely out in the field. Bautista may not want a desk job, so he may turn it down. LaGuerta may have to choose her successor, so she may choose Deb over Bautista because it would look poor for both her and Bautista if he took her old job. Finally, with Bautistas record over the last few years, he legitimately would not be made a Lt. He's always shown drinking in the bars heavily, has had an assault charge against him, a rape charge against him from season 2. Ya, he's cuban, but someone like that would never get promoted.

3)Deb has proven herself to solve cases season after season.

  21. is it me or has John just gone and repeated everything Matthew Battles has already?

    ReplyDelete
  22. @John :-

I think your Maria Demotion/Deb Promotion theory is wrong. I base this on one fact. If Maria was being demoted and Deb was taking her place they'd basically be switching and there wouldn't be a hole for Mike "Doakes Version2" Anderson to join the team.

The only way Mike would get on MiMet homicide would be if there was a VACANCY. MiMet has always functioned on the 2cop/1sargent/Lieutenant and some lab geeks... It wouldn't make sense to throw in another cop... too many people. I know there are other cops in the department; Ramos, Sodaquis etc but they're just extra roles. Not key players.

  23. @ Matthew Battles:
It has been said in many seasons that he's been "bucking for deputy chief"
I thought Matthews was Deputy Chief in season 4?I think thats what Maria calls him when she and Batista bring him the news of thier "empty" marriage decision, i could be wrong.

If Maria was being demoted and Deb was taking her place they'd basically be switching and there wouldn't be a hole for Mike "Doakes Version2" Anderson to join the team... It wouldn't make sense to throw in another cop... too many people.

Well not necessarily, Maria was still in Homicide @ a desk in Season 2 with a full house, b/c Pascal took over, haha.
Plus, I still dont buy that Maria was promoted. It doesnt make sense either that Matthews retired/died and his last wish/request would be: 'Let the Queen of blowjobs take my place',gasp. Dead. If he has retired he would not let Maria be in command, especially with all the drama that happened with her and Batista in S4 and 5. My point is, Matthews permitting Maria to be captian/chief would be way off his character, its not consistent. He would fight that, he always has the last word. Unless of course, Matthews found religion and said: 'I forgive you Maria, please take my command and office' Or, maybe LaGuerta performed her infamous Magjic blowing trick with the Board of review! haha. Well, we all will def found out very soon!

This is the Dexter storywriting team who just let the Sante Muerta case just evaporate last year?? I honestly think that they would go down this route...

And yeah, you're right about Maria being on the team in Season 2 BUT that was because the writers just went "Well we don't really know what to do with her while she's waiting for pascal to fuck up and give her her job back so we'll just stick her in a desk over there until we're done"

I did laugh at your queen of the blowjobs line... Perhaps Maria gave him an extended demonstration of her expertise?? Just kidding...

I reckon the writers will just make Maria captain and forget about everything that's gone before... Sante Muerta style... yay
