Executive Producer Sara Colleton: “Dexter Has Gotten His Groove Back”

Via TVGuide.com: Dexter is (almost) back — and it's time to get bloody! After several seasons of strife for Dexter (Michael C. Hall), Season 6 will find the serial-killing anti-hero in a new place in his life — both literally and figuratively.

There has been some buzz that the Showtime series would possibly jump ahead in the future, but executive producer Sara Colleton tells TVGuide.com exclusively just how far ahead the show is jumping. Read more after the jump!

SPOILER ALERT! "We thought a clean start to this season would be to jump ahead a year, so he's not getting over Lumen [Julia Stiles], and he's not still in the throes of dealing with the Rita [Julie Benz] thing," Colleton says. "We wanted to jump ahead a year and find that Dexter has gotten his groove back. He's gotten over Rita and Lumen."

While Season 5 dealt with Dexter atoning for his involvement, or lack thereof, in Rita's death, along with finally accepting his Dark Passenger's presence, this year we'll find Dexter has gone back to basics in many ways. "When we open up Season 6, we find Dexter in a very positive place in his life," Colleton says. "It's like the Dexter we know and love is back, and he still wants to play."

Still, a lot has happened in the year since Harrison celebrated his first birthday in the Season 5 finale. "There are things in life that Dexter's dealing with and one of them is that Harrison is now 2 years old and he has to go to school," she says. "There are things that he has to start thinking about with his son, and he's been keenly aware of what it is that he doesn't want to pass on to Harrison, namely his Dark Passenger, but Dexter has no idea what it is that he does want to pass on."

  1. I think it's necessary, though I am interested in what happened over the summer with the kids, and more.

  3. Well it makes sense. I mean the only time there wasnt a time jump of some sort was between seasons 4 & 5. And when season 6 starts it literally will be close to a year since last season ended, so its no big deal. With everything that has been coming out about the new season and with some amazing guest stars, this season may just be the best yet. Dexter is the absolute best show ever made, PERIOD!
Glad that Dexter is back in true form, back to Darkly Dreaming Dearly Devoted Deeply Disturbed Demented Daddy Dexter.

  4. Just like everybody has said, a year is a nice valid point for us to come back to him. We've seen him dealing with Rita's death and the exit of Lumen from his life would be much the same (though it might have been good to see him go off the rails a little when she left I get it)

I just hope they don't blitz Astor and (most importantly) Cody from the story - I had a real soft spot for those kids and so did Dex. While Astor has turned into a bit of a prick I can still see a lot of promise in the character of Cody.

  5. This should be interesting! I like the time jump because (and saying this, I did/do like Lumen a lot) we already had season 5 where Dexter had to get over Rita, so if season 6 didn't move past her and Lumen, then it would be a bit tedious. I like this decision :)

  7. I like the jump as well the only thing that is boggling is Harrison going to school. He's two! I highly, doubt he should be going to school at the young age of two but if he was four it would make sense of him being in preschool. I too, would like to see Lumen back her and Dexter had there own strange connection but it was daring and exciting to see where there relationship lead. Looking forward to this upcoming season.

  8. I think the powers at be behind Dexter recognize that season 5 was not the series' strong point, which is good for us since it feels like they're going to get season 6 right.

  9. Season five was my favorite! Even if the writers want to go back the basics it would be obnoxious if there was never any mention of Lumen or Rita again. The way they just brushed Lumen off in the last episode was a slap in the face after making her a central character of the season.

  10. Lumen was there for a purpose, that purpose was to facilitate Dexter's atonement for his involvement in (or lack thereof) in Rita's death. She served that purpose, and served it well, and now she is gone. There is absolutely no reason at all to revisit her character in any way shape or form. This is a character driven show, and more importantly, a DEXTER driven show. Lumen served her purpose to Dexter and thats that. I liked her but will be happy if she is never brought up again. And as far as Harrison and school go, I am almost positive they are referring to pre-school. More/less a glorified day care basically.

  11. @Matthew ...well bad news ...I think. On IMDB.com on the Dexter page ...it shows how many episodes and what years cast members are on the show ...like MCH for instance it shows 2006-2011, but on Cristina Robinson and Preston Bailey (Astor & Cody), both of theirs is only up to 2010, so it looks like neither of them will be in season 6. But who knows? They may have a small guest spot or something. Personally, they are okay and all, but if they are not on the show, its not really going to effect it in any way at all. Dexter won't skip a beat without Astor & Cody around. And really they are better off. As much as I love Dexter, it's not like he is super dad or anything. With his work and with The Dark Passenger that always has one hand on the wheel, he doesn't have a whole lot of time to play Daddy to 3 kids. He seems to do pretty well with Harrison, but that will get more and more challenging with each passing Birthday. They are better off with the grandparents. And Dexter is better off that way as well. Leaves more time for his extra curricular activities, if you will.
